Garmin interface to EV-100

Post by moctrams »

I installed Ray Marine EV-100 auto-pilot on Gabbiano and it is really impressive compared to my old Auto-Helm 4000. I mounted the P70 on my binnacle in a Edson Pod. The only (minor) problem was the short Spur cables. I ordered two (2) 14’ Spur cables and one (1) 1’ Backbone cable from Defender. Now, I want to interface the system to my Garmin GPSMAP451. I contacted both Garmin and Ray Marine for answers and I really don’t think the folks answering the Forum posts on their web sites know what they are doing. The closest interface cable is the A06046 / 59.1in (1.5m) DeviceNet Female cable, or simply splice a Garmin Drop cable to a Ray Marine Spur cable since the function and colors are the same (I think). Do any of you folks have any suggestions?

I believe both Garmin and Raymarine sell some sort of NMEA 2000 "Field-installable" Connectors. Electrically they should be the same so you could purchase a cable from one manufacturer and a field installable connector from the other. You would cut off the correct connector from the cable and install the other brand connector. This would be cleaner than splicing the two cables.

Garmin: This link should get you to both Male & Female versions:
010-11095-00 Female
010-11094-00 Male

Raymarine:

I may have been wrong, I was't able to find and field installable connectors for Raymarine's SeatalkNG version of NMEA2K but they do have adapter cables from SeatalkNG to generic NMEA2K (DeviceNet).

I am not sure if they are "mini" version or "micro" version of DeviceNet. If they are the "micro" version these cables may be all you need since I believe Garmin is standard DeviceNet "micro".

A06075 / 39.4in (1.0m) DeviceNet Female
A06078 / 3.9in (0.1m) DeviceNet Male
A06076 / 39.4in (1.0m) DeviceNet Male
A06046 / 59.1in (1.5m) DeviceNet Female

Many thanks to Bottomscraper for great reply.

I do believe the A06046 / 59.1in (1.5m) DeviceNet Female cable will work. What do you think?

Looking for a spare parts for my current 4000 is your old system available? I believe my immediate need is for a motor.
I would also be interested in more information on the pros of your switch should it come to that with my current system.

Sorry; Sold the old unit on eBay. I got $400.00 for everything. I did not want to charge a lot.

As I contemplate replacing my own ST4000 I am curious as to the details that have impressed you as improvements of the EV-100 over the old model. One of my biggest problems, next to the inability of the autopilot to maintain a heading under sail with any weather helm, is the poor mechanical implementation of the wheel drive. Hoping these problems are resolved with your new EV-100? Any other notable improvements to justify the big expense?

Well, the biggest improvement is having all the parts inside the boat or in a Edson pod and being much smarter i.e. interfacing with my GPS. I had to get the 4000 control unit from inside the boat mount it and plug it in. One time I had to take the plug apart and reconnect the wires. If a magnetic object like my SOG tool got too close, the 4000 would wander. Just a few things that make the EV-100 better.

How has the Ev-100 worked so far for you? Does it get overpowered sailing in rough seas or can it take it. Is there any angle of sail where it has a weakness? Would you choose this over a windvane?

I will test the unit next year. It's OK for the Chesapeake bay and if I went off shore, I would get a wind vane. I posted sketches to show what I have learned.
