Cushions for CD36

Post by Della »

I have a CD36 which needs new upholstery and probably foam cushions. On the bottom of the cushions there is a soft vinyl, is there any significant reason for this? Does it keep the material on the cushions in place? Does anyone know why Cape Dory put it on? It wasn't on my CD30. Any suggestions on what material to use? Has anyone used any microfibers, would they hold up to daily wear and tear, since we will be living aboard six months? Any information you have is definitely appreciated.

Thanks,
Della

Della:

When we put new interior cushions in our CD27 a few years back, we used a local upholstery shop that was having a big sale on custom cushion upholstery (it was February, a traditionally slow time for upholsterers) and selected a teflon-coated acrylic canvas (just like S
Sunbrella, but much cheaper). The new cushions are the same fabric all the way around, and we use velcro to hold the back cushions in place. Vinyl on the bottom of the cushions might hold them in place, but will also trap moisture.

The reason for the naughahyde on the back of the cushions is to protect the fabric from moisture absorbtion and the resulting mildew. A fabric bottom will get damp, and be more prone to mildew I expect.
It also buffers the cushions against the plywood berth bottom, saving it from wearing thin at the wear points on the bottom.

Our CD30 did come with the same tan naughahyde material, and we have ripped out the stitching, and reused this material on our new cushions that we are finishing as I type this. We replaced the old flattened out foam (open cell foam looses it's memory over time, as the individual cells are ruptured and deflated) with two grades of closed cell foam. A medium density closed cell on the bottom, and a low density closed cell on the top. Hope it works out.

Cheers!
