Bilge pump anti-siphon

Don't forget to snap some photos while you work on that boat project, then share them here.

Bilge pump anti-siphon

Post by hilbert »

It seems unlikely that this thru-hull for the electric bilge pump would be underwater:

But, I've read so many stories where people find their boat flooding while underway and eventually find out that their bilge pump is siphoning water back into the boat while heeling over. So (Is it wrong to start a sentence with a conjunction?), what the heck

Of course you will want to build a bracket out of G10 to last a few generation longer than the boat and probably glass the hull deck joint while your at it. I don't know why these little projects take so long to complete.

Nice neat installation :D
Is that a home made flap on your exhaust through hull?

The exhaust is a Centek thru-hull fitting with flapper. Being fiberglass with fire retardant resins, I ruffed up the surfaces and put it in with thickened epoxy.
The flapper is what sold me. I wanted to do something about following seas, but I didn't want the expense of a seacock.

Hilbert:

That is really neat :!: I wish I had the skill to do that - especially the G10 bracket.

Should the thru-hull/hose have two (2) hose clamps :?:

Good catch. Since the through hull will frequently be immersed it's a good idea.

Thanks Roberto, I've learned a lot by screwing up.

I'm planning to replace the hose clamps in the picture with better quality AWAB clamps.
Intellectually I understand that one quality clamp can adequately secure a small diameter hose to a fitting, but I would probably sleep better with two clamps where the fitting is long enough.

Interesting enough, ABYC and ISO only require double hose clamps on exhaust and fuel fill hoses.

Cheers,

Exceeding ABYC never got anyone in trouble.....

Disclaimer Alert, I am frequently wrong or "disremember," but I seem to recall somewhere that bilge pumps should not have anti-siphon devices attached.

Cliff, could you be thinking of a check-valve?
