Re: CD Typhoon in South Carolina
Have to agree with Steve on this, those old Gibb's aren't worth spending a dime on. I've seen small bronze winches at Mystic Consignment which would fit your application and be an period upgrade. I've only patronized the business personally but they also have a website http://www.marineconsignment.com/index.html you might like to look at.

Well, I had to at least try you know. Agree that the pitting can only be removed by a fill-in job, but as I told the gents at the metal shop the other day, let's try to just improve on the winches and see how that goes. This is an example of the finished product:
and
I like the look, whether pitted or not. Guy charged me $75 to do the refurbish of outside and he also worked the inside shafts which were in very good condition but he improved on the surface of them as well. I'll probably get to a gent and have the bases re-chromed after a bit of sailing or whenever I get tired of the look of the bases. Or maybe I'll not. I'm not sure but not in a hurry lol.
When the day comes they "fail me for the last time" (Circa Star Wars) then I'll replace them with something a bit more contemporary. Until then, I'll rub them and hope a Dory Genie comes aboard!

Ah the joy of a refurbished piece of Dory history...I thought some of you salty dogs would enjoy this view of the formerly ugly Gibb Winches now serving up the sheets on Baggy Wrinkles....they work perfectly! I highly recommend a trip down to your local machinists!

Had some fun sailing the last week as winds were strong and temps were warm over the lake. I think the GoPro is fairly interesting but the music is even better in the latest posting: http://baggywrinkles.blogspot.com/

Eye candy she is! Is your motor a long shaft or a short shaft. I noticed the lowered mount. Is the wooden mount held with more than two bolts? Looks like you may have added vertical plates? I replaced my broken, wimpy oak board with a beefy teak piece. Here it is in the rough, subsequently finished in Cetol. It's a bit heavy, but so am I.

Re: CD Typhoon in South Carolina
Rich, my piece of mounting is identical in thickness to yours except that it is further attached to a thick piece of aluminum which is cut out so that the mount is a bit lower than the top of the bracket. The motor cannot descend further without interfering with the bracket mounts. However, my motor is a normal shaft, and what I've found is that except for when I may go forward to wrap up the genoa before heading into port, the motor stays in the water just fine. As I pilot from the rear of the vessel and this keeps the prop circulating just fine below. I lock my motor in a straight position and always steer with my rudder.

Re: CD Typhoon in South Carolina
Sometimes a good deal comes along that is worth sharing. This one is probably for the ladies, but it is worth its weight in sail cloth!
We had a couple of old, tired sails. After unsuccessful attempts to donate them to some organization for human development projects in this place or that, we gave up due to unanswered emails and phone calls. So much for trying to donate!
Then, the 1st Mate and I came across SeaBags. What a great company and people. We donated our sails to them and received a couple of products as compensation for our sails. A final donation merited a large bag (photo below) and we asked them to create a Typhoon Logo for the bag as well. I thought many Cape Dory Owners would find this charming. We did...
Here is the bag they created for a donated sail and a few extra dollars for the logo creation:

Re: CD Typhoon in South Carolina
As many of this board wrap for the winter, southern exposure provides some brilliant days for sailing ahead. Here, my Gibb winch awaits a wrap on a port reach, with many more to come as the temps turn cooler and brisk Fall winds whip across Lake Murray.
And in case we need some extra gear aboard, check out the fantastic look from SeaBags customized for the Typhoon, 1st Mate loves these:
