Typhoon Doohickey

Post by casampson »

Greetings ladies and gentlemen of the the forum:

I'm having trouble removing the doohickey from the thingamabob on my 1977 Cape Dory Typhoon. I've got to remove and replace it before I launch on May 30th. Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards,

casampson

It might be best to consult a thingamabob specialist to ensure you don't risk damage to your doohickey.

Typically I use a Whatsit to loosen the Doohickey just a smidge before tapping the Thingamabob with a Wacker. If that doesn't work pry it off with a Whatchamacallit but be careful not to strip the left side Gizmo.

I like to use that spray stuff with red straw when things get really jammed.

Just make sure that you use the port doohicky instead of the starboard one - they turn opposite each other.

Thanks for all the good advice so far. I thought I'd add a photo to help illustrate my dilemma. This is a photo of a doohickey that I found on the web. This one has obviously already been removed from the thingamabob. I'd take a picture of mine, but my camera isn't working. Plus, I'm just too lazy to crawl in there with my bad back and all.

If you would have locked the doohickey while under way you probably wouldn't have this problem

Yea Verily,

It has been a long, hard winter. Slowly, one by one, the northern captains are finally beginning to thaw out and manifest themselves. :D :D

Thank you for posting the picture. Try a left handed turney thing with the godunk that clicks when you pump the handle.
I need help too! My marina guy called and said he wanted to rotate my running lights, something about helping with downwind performance or his investment performance, I don't know our phone connection was bad. I trust the guy because last year when storing the boat he pointed out the stern light was pumping oil and fixed it for $50 bucks! That could have been a mess going unchecked!
Happy Holiday Weekend all!

Mr. Fisher:

Did you mean to say: "Next time ask him what he is smoking"?

Big question: Should you lock the doohickey while sailing, put it is reverse or let it spin> :D

Can't really say for sure. The early models of the Ty didn't have Doohickeys. They came with something called a Hickdookey. They did the job up to a point. Sure, you could go downhill okay with them but going uphill was a bugger. The Doohickey was a great improvement.

It might be simplest to just replace the Doohickey. There's a new electronic version that West Marine is selling for only $899.95. Or you can get it in bronze from J.M. Reineck & Sons for only $1299.99 if you want the traditional look.
