Cost of new Ty sails

Post by Bruce Hettleman »

Hi,
We had a great first summer with our 1977 Ty and its original roller reefing mainsail. Currently, we are upgrading the boom to accomadate jiffy reefing and have been advised to obtain a new main. How much should this cost? Any recommendations about where to get one. Thanks.

Oddly enought I just got a Somerset quote in today. They quoted $475 if you order before 1/31. That includes full battens, 1 deep reef, 5.5 oz dacron. Sounds good but I've never heard of them so any recommendations would help.

The best other quote I had was from Sobstad which was $550 with all the trimmings.

Greetings Bruce,
Check out Kappa Sails in Westbrook, CT..Clarke Bassett made me a top full batten main w/ one deep reefing point and a 165% genoa for our Schaeffer roller.
Prices were very reasonable and the 165 jib really helps on august days here on long island sound..Their web site is kappasails.com
Good luck

I've also had good experience with reconditioned sails; I used Sail Care in Ford City PA to recondition my working jib last year; they did such a good job I'm using them again for my genoa this year. The cost is about $130 for the genoa, and that includes misc. repairs as well as cleaning. You can reach them at 800-433-7245.

For those in the midwest, I had Wolfe Sails in Topeka, KS (yes, Dorothy, this IS Kansas) make a new main for my Typhoon. Medium weigth cloth, one reefing point, and the Typhoon insignia. The price was $525. I haven't been able to put it on the boat (we are ice boating now), but it looks very good.
