CD 30 MK II owners regarding Builders Plate

Post by Michael Heintz »

Ken Coit has been kind enough to make the artwork for the MKII,
I do not have an original plate on Machts Nichts, and would like to hear from those that might. Ken is working on using the CD 30 and adding the MKII.

Also want know if anyone else is interested in getting a plate.

Thanks,

Michael Heintz

Yes, I have a brass plate about 3" x 2" it's a rectangle, not oval...
I think it saids something like CAPE DORY YACHTS
CAPE DORY MKII
002
E. TAUNTON, MASS

I think the CD 32's have a brass nameplate too. what are you doing? whats going on?! are you making new plates for the mark II? if you need to look at mine let me know...

Michael, i might have been mistaken about the cape dory 32 having a brass 3x2" name plate. someone sent me an email saying that their 32 has an "oval" one. i can send you a photo of mine if you want, or you're welcome to come up to take a look at mine.

Larry,

Bristol Bronze is reproducing the hull# builder's plates for us. They can reproduce them from a graphic artist's work but it is best to cast a new one from an already-existing bronze or metal plate. Would you be willing to remove the plate from your boat and send it to Bristol Bronze for reproduction?

We sent them our bronze plate (CD32) and they now have a casting for it so others can purchase a bronze plate if they'd like. Bristol Bronze returned our original plate which we'll put back on the boat. We had them make a new plate which we're attaching to the wooden plaque on our half-hull model.

Here's what our new plaque looks like:

Bristol Bronze has acquired larger stamps since they manufactured our plate so the hull number will appear much larger on your new plate.

They've also got desk sets available which would sport the builder's plate if you want one of those.

I think maybe Roger Winiarski of Bristol Bronze needs to chime in here, but my opinion is that working from an exisiting plate is easiest because it eliminates some steps, but working from artwork is best. The reason for that is that the mold taken from a casting has to be less sharp than the mold created from "original" artwork.

If the plate on the 30 MkII is rectangular, I sure would like to see a photo. It may be that the relief is so slight, as on my 14, that new artwork is a must. I suspect the rectangular flat plates were etched from sheet stock rather than cast.

I feel obligated to apologize as quickly as possible for the first sentence in my previous message. I really meant to hit "back" instead of "post."

Hi Catherine, If you want to post a photo of the brass plate from my MKII, I'd be glad to send you a photo so you can scan it and post. (I don't have a scanner) This is the "brass" plate that is screwed to the forward part of the companion way.(?)
If others MKII owners want a copy, I'd be glad to send it to BB.
