We have a 1971 typhoon weekender sorely in need of some gelcoat attention in Essex Mass. We are prepared to do prep work, but I'd like to have the actual gelcoating done by someone who knows what their doing. I am looking for any advice/recommendations on who to contact, how much work we should be prepared to do, how much we should be prepared to pay, how much fiberglass work might need, in general, to be done on a boat this age (there are somme dings and patches already...) and maybe some personal success/horror stories...
thanks

After our CD25D LOKI went on a "walk about" during a storm in 1996 we needed some gel coat repair on the starboard side of the hull. This work was performed at Pattens Yacht Yard in Eliot, ME (207)439-3967, ask for George. I'm certain he can recommend someone in the Essex area, or maybe his crew can do the work at your site. The end result was amazing, you could not tell where the repair stopped and the old hull surface started. There is a great deal of artistry in a good gel coat repair, and this art may be expensive. A cheap gel coat repair is just that, cheap. I can not recall the total cost as it was an insurance claim, but regardless I highly recommend George and his crew.
Best of luck with your repair. I'm headed out to sand varnish. Not much XC skiing this season, but a great winter to work on a boat.
