We decided recently to remodel the stern of Dayspring, our Cd30 in Nelson, New Zealand. She had been fitted with a rather ungainly radar and GPS tower about 2 metres high, which was mounted thru-deck right in the aft port corner, with stay wires in 3 directions. These clutter the cockpit space somewhat, so we have removed all that and have incorporated the tower into one of the pushpit uprights. This makes for an all in one unit, with no stays required and clears things up very well. It has not been fully refitted yet, but we are curious to find out if it will be stiff enough to withstand the weight of the gimballed scanner. The GPS and weather gear will also live there on 2 side-stalks. In addition we will be adding a teak
stern seat across the pushpit, at a suitable height so that one can sit there and steer ( in favourable weather at least ). If it works out OK, and anyone is interested in the design, let me know. Dayspring has Monitor self steering as well, but there does not seem to be any conflict with all of the above, spacewise or functionality-wise. She also has the Edson reverse slanted worm steering ( which some love, and some despise...the skipper adores it ). We would be interested in seeing any comments here, and will post a new message after the sea trials...in NZ it is full on summer time, and sailing is the thing. Dayspring has the honour of being pressed into service as the bridal suite for a waterfront wedding in February. We dont foresee and problems at all for her in that role. If the ships a-rockin, dont bother knockin !
Cheers

Revamping a CD30 Pushpit
Moderator: Jim Walsh
post photos?!?!
First I can not answer your questions with any experiance only with speculation. There are no terribly long unsupported sections of the pushpit so my guess is it is strong enough for your needs. PLEASE, HOWEVER, POST PHOTOS OF YOUR FINISHED PROJECT HERE. I am particually interested in the vane steering and pushpit seat.
I have seen other CD 30's with the utility tower you mention without supporting stays.

Revamping a CD30 Pushpit & Bow Pulpit
Murry,
On my 1977 CD30 the pushpit tubing broke off one of the fwd bolting flanges a few years ago. I found that the welds were minimal on all of the flanges for the pulpit and pushpit. I removed the pushpit and had all the flanges reinforced with 3/16" fillet welds. Check your welds. While the unit is off the boat it is easy to get everything reinforced.
It seems you already have quite a bit of weight aft. My boat squats already with a full cockpit or when under power. Putting a seat on the pushpit like a Catalina or Hunter would shift more weight aft and up. It would help visibility, but the helmsmen would be one step closer to going over the side. I prefer to sit in the cockpit on a couple of cushions to aid visibility. If the cockpit is crowded I will sit on the steering gear, but it is awkward getting on ond off.
Please post pictures of your new additions.
I plan to rebuild or replace the bow pulpit next spring. The original design prevents the anchor line from being shifted from the bowsprit roller to the fwd chock. If anchored in a storm, or if the anchor is stuck, the strain on the anchor line is too much for the bowsprit. The CD31 and newer CD36s have a bow pulpit that only mounts at 3 points, providing more flexibility for anchoring. I will mimick that design.

Re: Revamping a CD30 Pushpit
The work is done, except for the final seat construction...a mock up is in place and was tested last night on a picnic sail.
The tower seems to be more than strong enough, and I have added in a
1.8 metre VHF antenna as a back up to the masthead one. The cockpit now seems to have grown enormously , and perched on the seat, with one foot on the wheel and a glass of great New Zealand Chardonnay in one hand, the world seems to be a much better place. I doubt if the seat would see alot of use on the ocean where one is more likely to seek
the shelter of the dodger, but there are days when it would be a great
spot to survey the horizon...you can see over the dodger ( just ) without strain.
I do not have a digital camera to provide a photo on the BB. If anyone is interested though I could do a drawing in some format and attach it to an email.

Re: Revamping a CD30 Pushpit
Although I just purchase an older CD36 that I am in the process of
refitting. I did put a similar seat arrangement in my CD30 and have a
picture I can try and put up. I'm not all that savy on how to do it, so it may take a day or so. If there is someone out there who does know how to easily post a picture, let me know.... otherwise I'll bumble along till I figure it out.
Pat
p.s. I do know how to send and image via email and if your interested I could do that.
