propeller shaft, ? stainless - cd31

Post by len freedberg »

i am installing a new propeller shaft on my cd 31 having had to remove the old one to drp the rudder - the old shaft had to be cut - i am advised by the propeller shaft that they are using stainless steel shafts now because bronze is as expensive and good bronze shafts not readily available (five years ago when i pulled the shaft to replace the cutlass bearing they did use bronze) - ? anyone has replaced their shaft with a stainless steel one and if so ? any problems

I worked at the River Forest Marina and Belhaven Shipyard off and on from 1993 til 1998 and I do not remember anything being installed except stainless on any boat, sail or power.

I spent about 10 years working for the Coast Guard witnessing the manufacture and repair of shafts, props and a lot of other things.
Anybody in the RI, CT MA area that needs shafts or shaft work there is a machine shop in New London, CT that just moved from ESSEX, CT. They stock shafting, props, bearings, and some struts. They are the best I have delt with. I have been out of touch with them for about 2 years and that is when they moved. The phone # is/was 800-724-0528.
I don't know if they have they changed their name but they were, Essex Machine works then The Machine works at Essex. They were founded by a fellow who had a boat yard and needed a machine shop. It evolved into a fairly large enterprise with very good craftsmen.
I hope this can help some of you.

Good Luck and HAPPY HOLIDAYS
