the pin in the pintle of my CD 31 (1984) has become loose, the hole in the pintle is no longer round, and the pin is also loose in the gudgeon - i have removed the pintle and pulled the rudder - ? anyone has had this problem and if so how did you fix the pin securely back in the pintle and restore the gudgeon to 1" round

loose rudder pintle/gudgeon on CD 31

Re: loose rudder pintle/gudgeon on CD 31
I did have this problem on my CD330. I had the yard remove the lower gudgeon and what I found was surprising. The lower gudgeon is glassed in but it is also thru bolted with bronze hardware. Because the lower gudgeon is not bonded - there was extensive galvonic corrosion to the bolts. They were replaced with SS hardware and I added a clamshell zinc.len freedberg wrote: the pin in the pintle of my CD 31 (1984) has become loose, the hole in the pintle is no longer round, and the pin is also loose in the gudgeon - i have removed the pintle and pulled the rudder - ? anyone has had this problem and if so how did you fix the pin securely back in the pintle and restore the gudgeon to 1" round
The next surprise was that although the gudgeon is about 3.5" deep - the pintel only entered about .75" so it was point loading on a small surface area and soon got out of round. The pintel on my boat is a small section of 1" prop shaft in a bronze sleeve in the rudder. I did not attempt to fix the part of the gudgeon that was damaged but simply put in a longer pintel to take advantage of the good metal left.
Let me know if you have any q's.
