CD Typhoon Wkdr Encapsulated Ballast
What is the ballast material and should any part of it be exposed to the sea/air? Looked at one up for sale and could feel cold metal where paint had chipped off as opposed to slightly warmer glass. Outside temperature was about 36˚F.

I own a Ty Senior, but I think the construction is very close to the weekender. Ballast is lead, and it's totally encapsulated at the factory, glassed and gelcoated over after installation.

There is a metal shoe aft where the rudder attaches - the paint/gelcoat does not stick very well to this. Perhaps that is the metal you saw. There is a galvanized ring imbedded in the lead ballast that can be seen in the bilge accessed through the hole covered by a teak=l 4" x 4" cover. This was used to lift the ballast and place it into the molded hull then it was glassed in. The ring should not be used to lift the boat but was used to position the ballast. Make sure that there are no cracks in the hull where water could get between the ballast and fiberglass hull. Winter freezing could cause expansion and create more cracks in the fiberglass. This was the case when I bought my Typhoon and is caused a lot of extra work to drain, dry and fill these voids. You may also have had a thruhull that was glassed over with the epoxy filler/glass chipping off the bare metal.

I have to Think Dick is right on this. Likely tan old thru hull or rudder support. It seems to me you would need a pretty big crack to get down to the lead ballast.
