Ken,

A sailors prop is a prop that doesn't have as much of a bite to it. Sailboats are usually only pushed at about 5 - 6 knots. An outboard with a stock prop on them will push a smaller boat much faster, causing the engine to run at it normal operating RPM'S or in it's power band. If you stick an outboad on a sailboat with a stock prop on them then they can't turn over as fast and you loose performace from the outboard because it can't reach it's power band.
This also puts a more wear and tear on the engine. Johnson also makes a sail engine that they also reduce the gearing down in the lower unit. If this outboard is going into a CD then also make sure of the length in the shaft. You'll probably want a 25", depending on which boat you are putting it in and make sure you have the horsepower there too. CD's are heavy boats, I own a 25 cd and I am thinking of putting in an 8 hp.
