Just out of curiosity, why did you lead the line lathe way forward on the boom? Could the line have come down to a turning block right in front of the traveler?

The CD28 came from the builder with self tending jib and hardware to handle it already installed. The small block just starboard the mast was already there, as was the winch & cleat to secure the sheet seen inside the dodger. In the case of a CD28, it was much easier to re-purpose these fittings than create new ones. The CD36 (my current boat) came from the builder with a very similar set up running down the port side.

Also, mounting a new block right in front of the traveler would mean mounting a new block onto the spray hood, which itself is held in place by just short wood screws into teak runners, not the most solid foundation for critical gear carrying high loads.

My mid-boom traveler project is on hold for the moment. I've discovered a seriously rusty metal plate in the anchor locker - a design that has been much discussed on the forum. I'm much less excited about this project than I am about the mid-boom traveler. I'm hoping to salvage some of what's there and add an additional plate where the rust has become a real issue.
