Interesting. My winches did that also. Darker than the rest of he bronze. Did you clear coat yours with lacquer?

No clear coat Chris. I figured Permalac would wear off so quickly I left them like this after buffing.

Permalaque has held up for me now three years. I used some other stuff on one of the stern cleats that is not holding up so well. Will see how long it shines for but I'm happy with it now.

I determined on setting up the rigging alone that I was going to have to be very careful to respect this body's limits so I made some assurance of safety in each step I took. This is one of those steps; a ratcheting block attached to the trailer winch strap. Once the rig was up, and yes it is heavy, the slight balance of stays allowed me to reach down and grab this line and cleat it off, thereby securing the rig from leaning back while I climbed down and attached the roller furling assembly.
Update 11/2014: This method in reverse allowed me to lower the mast completely w/o carrying any of the weight, simply by releasing tension on the line. Slow and smooth.

And here she is at the Sandusky Sailing Club. She's the smallest in size on my dock but definitely one of the largest as far as having some serious class!

Glad to finally have found this redo. You've done a splendid job on her!

I agree with Chris that using Permalac is a great option for the winches. Mine are holding up very well. I would like to find some new winches themselves--if anyone has a lead on the originals? Mine are Gibb or something like that. I cannot find them anywhere.

Good reference too on the method for holding the forestay/furler for installation and safety. I like the trailer winch option. Will think about that next time I'm fiddling with my mast alone again.

However they wanted $65.00 to ship a six foot piece to Saint Louis. They do not sell shorter lengths , neither does Hamilton. I went to kudzu craft and bought two 12" pieces for less than $20.00
