1975 Cape Dory Handy Cat 14'

Post by watergirl »

FOR SALE: 1975 Cape Dory Handy Cat 14’

This Handy Cat 14' was made by Nauset Marine in MA. It has spent its life on the St. Martins River and Assawoman Bay on Maryland's Eastern Shore. It has only had one owner, my grandfather, and has always been well cared for-- for its age it is in very good condition. I grew up sailing it with my grandfather and we had many wonderful sails together. I hate to give it up for sentimental reasons, but I simply have no place to sail it where I live now and it is difficult to continue to store it. The boat has been preserved and stored in a clean garage for the past five years.

Ten years ago, we had the gelcoat and teak redone at Hartge Boat Works in Galesville, MD. There is one spot on the bow that is a repair--which would have to be buffed out if you were worried about looks. Just after we had the boat reworked, my grandfather scrapped it accidentally coming into his dock.

The sail and mast hoops are in new condition--they too were replaced not long ago. Everything else on the boat is original--blocks, bronze hardware, mast, booms. The mast and booms are still in good useable condition, however, they are not pretty. Usually we would sand them down and refinish them almost every year, but they have not been done in quite a while now. I do not have a sail cover.

The trailer is in excellent condition. It too has been in a garage. All you need is a tag to make it back to your house. It is a 1998 galvanized Load Rite trailer with rollers to help you easily roll the boat on and off safely. All the lights etc. are working--tires are in great condition, bearings etc. It is a 1998, but it is really like new.

The Handy Cat is stored in our garage in southern Virginia. Although it is a lot of work to get this boat to the DC Metro area, I will trailer it here for your inspection if you are seriously interested and ready to purchase this Handy Cat.

I know what other people are asking for their Cape Dorys and I will entertain any reasonable offer for this Handy Cat with trailer.

If seriously interested please email me.

Hello. Thanks for your interest. The HandyCat is currently in my garage at my Lake place. Our place is on Lake Gaston just off Rt85 and about 14 miles past the town of South Hill. We will be at our Lake place next weekend if you would be interested in looking at it. Most people selling their Cape Dory Handy Cats are asking 8,000 to 11, 000 in excellent condition with a trailer. My grandfathers Cat is in what I would consider good condition-- like I said in the ad-- it needs its mast, booms sanded and refinished. The teak is clean, but could be brightened with teak cleaner and then oiled-- that would make it really pretty. The mast hoops and sail were replaced not too long ago so they look great and have been stored in my spare bedroom--dry and they don't smell! I am going to say I feel it is worth around $6500 with the trailer which is almost like new condition. You are welcome to look at it and make me an offer.

I can assure you there is absolutely no fiberglass problems-- meaning rot or blisters etc. We took very good care of the boat and it was as I said, refurbished just a few years ago. It has been garage kept the last five. I was hoping I would move somewhere where I could use it, but I don't see that happening. Also, my father has a 34' Dragonfly trimaran, so when I go out sailing--it is usually with him on the big boat.

I hate to give up the little Handy Cat for sentimental reasons, but I would like someone to have it that will appreciate it, wants a little cat and will use and enjoy it. I am sorry, but I really don't have any digital photos of the boat since it has not been sailed in awhile.

If you would be interested in trecking to my Lake place on Gaston to look at it--let me know and we can coordinate for next weekend. We will be there Saturday and Sunday before returning back to Maryland.

Try emailing me again--perhaps with a different email address, or check yours to see if somethings wrong????
Thank you for your interest-- If I can email you, I'll send you my cell phone number so we can talk and perhaps set something up so you can come see the boat.
