The stop control on my 2GM20F diesel engine is getting harder and harder to pull out when I try to stop the engine. I can not get to the bracket supporting the stop button without removing the instrument panel located on the transom. Should I try lubricating the section on the engine where the control cable is mounted --- provided I can find it?
Any suggestions will be appreciated

Disconnect the cable from the engine, and try to operate the button again. If it's still stiff, then the problem is the cable. (That's where my money is). Measure the cable, and you can get a new one at a good marine mechanic shop. You'll need to get to the back of the instrument panel for the replacement.

Re: Engine stop remote control
I've had some trouble with my stop cable as well. I have found, however, that removing the panel from the transom is pretty painless and have done it maybe half a dozen times for various chores involving access to the transom. I have also noted that lots of stuff on my 25D pass behind that cable as it tries to make 90 degree turn toward the port cockpit locker and into the engine compartment. My engine vent tubing was pressing against it in that tight space forcing the cable to a tighter turn than it wanted! I would take a real good look back there just to see what's going on. The cable fitting itself was easily accessed and lubed there once the panel was off.
Good Luck.

You should know where the stop lever is on the engine, especially if the cable is giving you trouble.
