Couple of CD22 Survey Questions

Post by s2sailorlis »

Did an initial "survey" of a '84 CD22 that has been sitting on the hard for about 8-10 years. It's probably a full step above a Project boat, and in below average condition - maybe a little "north" of Fair.

I have several pictures below and appreciate your opinion as I am getting closer to making a decision on one of several CD 22's on the market (or a sea sprite 23...). And if I DO get a CD - i will for sure join the Association!

What appears to be a rudder tube crack is most disturbing - if that is the case- have to take another picture later weekend.

Happy 4th.

The non skid areas of my 1984 CD22D were crazed just as badly when I received it. I covered it with kiwi grip and it hooks great after almost three years. The seacock in the photo is the standard bronze seacock original equipment. It will take some cleaning and lapping. Of the four seacocks on my boat, only on one have I been unable to stop a drip. The hose, on the other hand looks pretty scary.

I can't say much about the rudder post. Could be superficial but I don't know. My boat was somewhat neglected but nothing was irreparable. These are pretty durable boats. It's just a matter of how much time you are willing and able to put into it.

Needs some work, for sure, but no huge red flags in those pictures, I'd say. They're simple boats, so routine overhauls, like replacing hoses, redoing electric, etc aren't really very big projects. There are only 3 thru-hulls for example.

I'd pay close attention to sounding the deck, but I think CD had their deck lamination pretty well figured out by this point.

Keep in mind that CD22s in good condition (not excellent condition, but good working order with decent sails, not in need of big repairs or refits), can be had for $8-10,000, with trailer. So even for a not-so-bad-project boat, make sure the discount is worth your time.

I agree with the previous commentators and would add on the rudder stock to hull joint. Just grind out the crack and area around it and add several layers of biaxial cloth set in epoxy. A well make patch should restore that area and cost very little except your labor.
