Obituary: Roy A. Jacobowitz

Post by Neil Gordon »

I'm sorry to report the loss of Roy Jacobowitz, on May 30th.

Roy bought Nonsly from Stan Wheatley last year but never got to sail her. I do hope that the dream brought him some pleasure during his hard fight.

What a sad loss to the community. I sailed with Roy a number of times, great guy, great sailor.

He'll be missed.

Yes, I remember Roy. I never met him in person but I remember when he would write posts on this forum. I remember reading his posts about a sailboat he named after the color of his wife's hair, AUBURN.

Roy was a great person, a great sailor. The sailing world will sorely miss him.

Roy (left) was a great guy, and CD25 Auburn was his boat. I took this photo in a foggy Scituate Harbor on a buddy boating trip (along with Eric Woodman/CD25 Allia) back in 2003. Great people, great times. Roy's smile & cheerful outlook will be missed all along the coast.

Very sorry to learn this. I always enjoyed sailing and talking with Roy, and his health seemed to be headed in the right direction when he bought Nonsly last fall. I wonder if the sea-trial was his last sail. If so, it was a good one.

This is Roberta, Roy's wife, and the person with the Auburn hair our boat is named after. Roy loved to sail, and he loved Cape Dory's and the Cape Dory Board. The sea trial for Nunsly was his last sail. I bought the boat for him for his birthday last fall, hoping that the anticipation of sailing a new boat would contribute to his health. Nunsly sits in our driveway and I have decided to launch Auburn myself. It goes in the water on Monday. This is the first time I have launched a boat by myself and I am working furiously to remember all of the details so as to launch and have a safe and sound season.

Roberta,
Best of luck with Auburn. I can't think of a more fitting memorial than your continued enjoyment of sailing.
