1975 cape dory 28 Faryman powered.
Hi......had engine and trany removed for service in the fall while the boat was in the service slip. I was not present at the time....boat was put on the hard and shrink wrapped. Yesterday went out to remove the wrap and found the boat completely flooded on the hard . Assuming the mech never shut the engine sea valve when he removed the engine......can't find the sea valve control....anyone have an idea of its location? Thanx Ben ...ps. .....owned the boat 13 years....I know I should know where the valve is located.

My 28 is powered by a Volvo Penta 2002 and the fitting is located under the sink.....I would recommend just following the hose, that should lead you in the right direction.
Not sure leaving it open would cause flooding.....heavy rain and a torn cover??

Thanx for the info....the shrink wrap was taunt and secure....had to happen before the shrink wrap...we ran the bilge pumps....two pumps....over an hour to get rid of the water.....everything was floating inside and we had floating pieces of ice....we had a brutal winter. Don't know what to tell the insurance company....it's gonna be interesting

I am so thinking of putting in a garboard drain plug... I think northern boats spend more time out of the water than in.

Was the boat hauled right after removing the engine? An open seacock while the boat is still in the water would sink the boat pretty quick, I have a hard time imagining that this is what happened unless the boat was hauled the same day that the engine was removed. But then, its also hard to imagine that much water ingress through shrink wrap, even with a really brutal winter. By chance did you taste the water before pumping it out to see if it was fresh or salt?

Hi....the boat was in the service slip at the time of engine removal with the sling belts loose underneath it was a Friday afternoon and the marina left the boat in the water for the weekend above loose belts. We assume as the boat filled up with seawater is sank until the belts we're taunt . They pulled the boat out with about two hundred gallons of seawater in the cabin....it took two bilge pumps running full blast for close to an hour to pump put the vessel.....the insurance company says they never have had a boat sink on the hard....the damage is the same as if it sunk in the slip....wish me luck....this may be it for the "Donnybrook"

Did the water get above the floorboards or onto/into the engine? Was there any evidence that the ice froze solid enough to damage the bilge or structure? Your explanation makes a lot of sense but it seems strange that the person doing the lift didn’t notice the weight or center of gravity change with all the water in her. Any photos showing the degree of water intrusion? I wish you the best of luck in getting her back in shape.

Pete....the water level reached the height of the seat area in the cabin and floated the cushions . The engine was removed ,thank god ,cause the engine compartment was full of sea water. I do have a concern about ice damage through expansion but I do believe that their was enough open space to allow ice expansion. The biggest problem right now is the obvious water damage and the associated mold and mildew. We estimate that their was in excess of 400 gallons of water in the boat when it was put on the hard. The water did not vent through the intake hose because somewhere down the line a floatations cushion jammed itself under the hose and prevented water drainage......this is what happens when you retire. Boats us insurance rep said same damage as if the vessel sunk. First time a cd 28 sank on the hard.....Ben

Did your batteries escape flooding? Sounds like the only good thing is that your elec control panel may have escaped being flooded but I’m sure the wiring running low were underwater. Good luck, do you think that you’ll be able to save her? From the insurance side, the statement “same if the vessel sunk” seems to indicate that they will total it and that it could then be brought back as salvage. Anyone have an idea what the process is with boats…..seems like it might be somewhat different than for automobiles. This makes me want to relook my insurance.

Hi.....I do not believe that they will total the vessel. The problem is they are trying to figure who is at fault. I explained that it's immaterial who is at fault because it's definitely not me. Looks like about 5000.00 damage. We will see what they cover....Ben ....... By the way ....the insurance carrier is boats us
