I am looking at a CD-30 Ketch. It's a 79 and sounds as though it's in good shape (I haven't actually seen her yet). She has a 1991 Yanmar 18hp diesel, sales that are about 5 years old, all the usual gadgets and nessessities to sail and a few extras. The part I need help on is what to look for during my visit to see her. I will definately have a survey done before I actually exchange any money but I want to make sure the boat is worth the cost of the survey before I spend any money at all. Is there anything I should look for other than the typical stuff any 20 year old fiberglass boat might have? Any pointers would be appreciated. They're asking 25,000.

Re: CD-30 Ketch (need some advice and tips)
I owned and sailed a 78 from 83 to 89. Tough boat. They do not point well and aren't the fastest boat in the world, but most ketchs aren't. I was never in a hurry and loved mine. Blisters? Has it had a barrier coat, such as Interlux 2001? Anysoft spots in deck? I raised mizzen boom 10" and had mizzen sail recut so I could stand under boom. I am 6' tall. Most of what I mention can only be confirmed by survey.Pat wrote: I am looking at a CD-30 Ketch. It's a 79 and sounds as though it's in good shape (I haven't actually seen her yet). Pat,
I own a 1977 CD30 Ketch, which I really enjoy.
There is really no substitute for a survey by an experienced, unbiased, surveyor. You can get a blank survy form and run through it yourself. That way it helps you check most items prior to the survey.
The price is in the ballpark. Condition, location, and equipage can vary the price quite a bit.
I assume the boat has worm gear steering. Check the worm gear supports for corrosion. They are mild steel and hard to see. For the forward support remove the wheel house cover and use a mirror. It is located underneath the worm assembly around the rudder shaft. The aft supports are located in the lazarett. You need to get in the cockpit locker and crawl aft.
Check the backing plates for the bowsprit and shrouds. They are also all mild steel.
Check for cracking or softness in the decking that could indicate water intrusion in the core.
Good Luck, e-mail me if you have specific questions.

I recently purchased a CD30 and found that the rudder was full of water. So make sure the surveyor pays attention to that item also.Olli Wendelin wrote: Pat,
