GENSET for CD 33

Post by Frank Vernet »

I'm exploring the option of installing a GENSET onboard my CD 33 to drive a small a/c unit (require approx. 20A output). A local engine guy took a look and claims that no one makes a 20A GENSET small enough to fit on the boat. Does anyone have experience with this?

I have no direct experience with GENSETS for sailboats but have sized several emergency power generators for commercial use. You mentioned 20A - that sounds more the circuit it needs to be plugged into than what it draws. You really need to know running current and, what is often neglected, the starting current. For single equipment installations like yours, the starting current will govern. Put the biggest unit in that space allows. If you dont, the genset may have a hard time maintaining voltage and you may damage the AC unit.

You can check out Chinadiesel they list sizes on their web pages, they even sell Yanmar and Kubota. But like pervious post you need to be concerned with starting current on a compressor.

Westerbeke has just come out with a very small 5kw set all enclosed that takes up very little room and will power an AC unit,a friend put one on his sailboat this summer and has been pleased.
