Garhauer Traveler upgrade for CD26D

Post by rollo_cd26 »

Recently I installed a Garhauer MT-3 traveler to replace the original Spartan T-track traveler on my CD26D ( Mirabile, Latin for wonderous). The original T-track was worn and I really didn’t like the screw pin stoppers on the Spartan. I also replaced the original main sheet Shaeffer blocks with new Garhauer blocks. I had admired the Harken traveler upgrade posted by Barfwinkle on this forum and I thought that I could possibly take on this project. When taking a look at his traveler I noted that someone mention Garhauer in one of the posts. After looking into Harken and Lewmar, I decided to take a look at the Garhauer web site. After several measurements I called Garhauer and they (Guido) recommended the MT-3 traveler for my boat. Below is the result. Note that I had to make a teak riser to allow the MT-3 car to clear the cockpit coaming. Originally, I did not consider several aspects of this project, namely the slight curvature of the hull, someone referred to this as “camber”. Beware that the Garhauer car rides a little deeper than the old Spartan car and you must account for the dimensions of the new unit.

I am not an experienced woodworker, nor do I have more than layman’s knowledge of sailboat design and function. I do have access to a well equipped shop, but used only a band saw and belt sander to cut and shape the teak. However, I made several mock-ups with pine to test the fit of the riser. This is my first effort at a major upgrade on my Cape Dory, i.e. no one told me not to do it the way I did. I appreciate the design and function of my CD26, so if I have violated significant design and functional aspects, please let me know. I started this project in October 2013 and completed installation on January 22, 2014. Keep in mind that Garhauer does quality work that took 4 or 5 weeks from order to delivery. Also note that my boat sails Lake Ouachita in Arkansas, 90 drive minutes from our house. This project took awhile.

The MT-3 was custom built to my specifications – 37 inches long with hole spacing on 4 inch centers to match the nine holes in the deck. Garhauer fabricates travelers from a soild piece of extruded aluminum so it gives very little, keep that in mind when determining length, hole placement, and curvature. Upon first fitting, I realized I had to make the riser. I bonded 3/4" and ½” teak using West System epoxy to make a 1 ½” wide riser that tapered from 1 1/16” to 3/8”thick. The riser is made in three pieces, port, starboard, and middle. To align all nine holes in the one piece riser, traveler, and hull was nearly impossible so I split the riser into two four hole and a single hole piece in the middle and treated with Deks Olje teak sealer before installing. Amazingly, the bolt holes for the traveler and riser aligned and the fit to the hull holes was almost perfect with a slight curvature. It all fit together!

Installation: port side first bedding the teak with butyl tape (Compass Marine) against the hull then progressing to the starboard side. I used 4 - 5 inch long ¼” stainless steel Phillips head counter sunk bolts to fit the traveler flush and nylon insert nuts with washers. Since the CD26D has an aft locker, access to thread the nuts was simple but the nuts are at an angle to the underside of the fiberglass which I do not like. (suggestions here?) By the way be sure to use the right size Phillips tip (#3 shown) when tightening the bolts to keep from galling the heads.

The cam cleats were removed earlier to attach the traveler so these go back on with the keeper plates on the ends. Trying to fit the old blocks to the new traveler was going to be more expense and trouble than buying new matching Garhauer blocks. I decided to replace the main sheet Shaeffer blocks with Garhauer a 30-02 fiddle block with shackle and a 30-06 fiddle block with cam cleat. Garhauer mated the control block to the car very nicely. Thread some 3/8” line (red and green) on the sheaves and there it is. I sailed one of the mock-ups in-place, and I am looking forward to sailing the complete traveler installation.

In the background of these pictures there are a couple other projects from the last 8 months, a solar panel and a swim ladder.
Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Rollo:

What website are you using for your photos - Picaso, Photo Bucket, Flicka, etc. :?: :?:

I am getting ready to once again try to learn how to post photos and would like to sign up with a photo website that is easy, simple, does not cost a lot to join, and where the photos show up on this CDSOA site relatively quickly.

Thanks,
Fair winds,

Roberto

Rollo,

Well done. You can be proud of your work.

I am interested in what you did for your boarding ladder. Do you have other pictures and a parts list?

Doug

Robert

I am using Photobucket for my pictures. It is fairly easy to upload pictures (point and click), and they have a neat feature to copy the URLs and image tags. In the upper right corner of a thumbnail photo there is a little gear symbol that has several functions listed of which one is "Get Links". Click on Get Links and a select box opens with the available tags for that selected photo, the last is an IMG tag. Just click on the IMG tag to copy the link then paste into your post or reply. It is so simple even I can do it without instructions.

Doug,

The swim ladder actually came from Second Wave (www.secondwave.cc), a second hand boat equipment and parts store in north Seattle. My son is stationed with the USCG out of Seattle and does my shopping there. With the station bases it cost me about $130 plus shipping. I had a rung added to the lower section. Thanks for your interest, I do have pictures and I can post as a project. The solar panel is going to be relocated soon using some used bicycle parts!

Rollo,

That's sounds like a great bargain. I would love to see the photos as a project.

Used to live in Edmonds, WA, where I kept my CD TY SR, RECOVERY. What a great place to sail.

I will check out Second Waves site.

Thanks and Fair Winds,
Doug

I'm doing the same thing for my CD28. However, I had Garhaurer bend the traveller to fit the curve of the deck (they did this for free! amazing customer service) and then I bent a piece of teak to fit. The teak is soft enough to bend just using C-clamps. I'm waiting until the warm weather comes before I install it.

Interesting that you could figure out the curve for Garhauer to replicate. When I took off the old T track there was no bend in it. On the CD26 the deck curve is very slight and I communicated this fact to them. My traveler arrived with the slightest perceptible bend at the mid point and I managed to coax the pieces into position. The bigger issue was the rise and matching the holes of the traveler, riser. and the deck, hence the reason for dividing the riser into three parts. I have since seen another project for a CD22 on this forum that used a single piece riser (nice looking). Also, be sure understand how many line turns there will be through the blocks so the correct line diameter and length is obtained. Garhauer over estimated the amount for mine as 4:1, hence I have to shorten it a bit. They will provide the line if requested. To anyone considering this job it is very important to talk to Garhauer first. Realizing quality takes time, order well in advance.
