Help with Cd-25 purchase

Post by Joseph Voss »

I am currently looking at a 73' cd25 and was hoping for some input from knowledgeable folks as far as what to look for, possible problems etc. Thanks for any response.

Be sure to get a professional survey before you purchase it! Also include an engine survey-costs about $100.00 but well worth it!

If you plan to insure it at a later date, you will probably need it for the insurance company.

Joe, Cape Dory's have a reputation as being very well made boats and stand up well to the test of time. One thing I would suggest is to look at a few 25's so that you can better judge the condition of the 73'. You may find that once you have looked at a few you will gain confidence in your purchase.

Joe,
I purchased a 78' 25CD this past spring. I found that getting a good suvayor out to look at the boat is extremely important. Also when they do that, make sure you are there so they can point out any problems. I found this out the hard way. My survayor wasn't the best and missed some important area that I feel was important to be looked at. Ask him if he is licensed and how long he has been doing this. With some minor repairs though I wouldn't trade my 25 for any other boat out there. As for the extra $100 for the engine survay, I wouldn't worry about it. If you have a compression tester, test the compression. Outboards should be around 110-120 psi. The nice thing about the 25 is that it's gas. If something serious goes wrong you can just pull it out and get a newer one. Good luck.

My CD25 is Hull #19. Built in 73, launched in 74. Only thing found by licensed surveyor was outdated electrical system (including some deterioration in insulation in 12v system). Not serious and relatively easy to fix.
Re: the outboard. Don't pay extra for an engine survey if the engine is "old". Run it as long as you can with confidence and then buy a replacement. We went to an 8hp Nissan this spring with electric starting. Easy on this old feller.
You will love your CD25.
