outboard fuel consumption

Post by chris mullins »

i recently upgraded from a 3.3 to a johnson 6hp in my cd25.a few days of calm winds have had me idly wondering what my range would be if i wanted to motor someplace instead of sail, for some reason.i have two six gallon tanks, which would last forever, but probably not if i used the engine.does anybody know the rate of fuel consumption, cruising speed, and how much throttle these engines would want to be run at,if one were to motor for a few hours instead of a few minutes? thanks, chris.

It would be safe to say......less than a gallon an hour. It may be as little as a half a gallon/hr at about 1/2 throttle but there are alot of variables and only a trial run can help you predict your usage.

Chris,

I've got a Johnson 2cycle 8hp on my CD25. If the water is flat and there is no wind, I can cover about 50 nautical miles with my two 6 gallon tanks.

thanks for the responces, everybody seems to be getting in the same ballpark.if i figure three knots at a gal/hr,i hope to be on the safe side.i don't think my nerves would stand more than twelve hours under power anyway.thanks again, chris.
