Synthetic oils in Yanmar engines?

Post by Bob Ohler »

Our CD 25 has the Yanmar model # 1GM engine. Another boater said that since he started using synthetic oil in his Yanmar, it ran cooler, and quieter. Now I'm from the old school, and I'm relucatnt to try the "new stuff", but he assured me that he had checked this out with the local Yanmar shop, and was told that it was ok. I have 2 questions:
1. Has anyone tried using the synthetic oils (Mobil1, Quaker State Synthetic, etc.) What is your experience with the synthetic?
2. What viscosity are you using? I have seen 10W30, 10W40, 20W50, and 5W30. But my engine calls for SAE30. I would be willing to switch if I knew of other boaters had tried the synthetic oil without any problems. I've looked everywhere, and I have yet to see a SAE30 synthetic oil.

Hi Bob,

In 1985 I switched over to synthetic oil (Mobil 1) in everything I own. I did this after seeing what wear was on a friends auto engine after 120K miles. There was any that you could measure.

I have a 85 SAAB which I use 10-30 wieght in both the manual transmission and engine. (Yes, motor oil is used in this year for the transmission). I have about 165K on the car now, does not burn anything. But besides that I use it in my 4 stroke outboard, lawn mowers, etc. All have been great for about the same amount of years.

As a profession I use and maintain large gas compressors (2250 hp). We would never consider anything other than synthetic oil. Wear and maintainance is just too much with natural oils. I would ask what wieght of oil this guy was using in his Yanmar.
