Noise from Edson pedestal

Post by Tom Keevil »

We repowered Rover last year, and there is considerably less engine noise. However, there is a new and annoying noise in the cockpit emanating from the steering pedestal. It is a high pitched vibration that is loudest at the base of the pedestal. Nothing is vibrating at the accessible top of the pedestal, and nothing we can find in the engine room. Of course the inside of the base is inaccessible. Any ideas?

A couple of thoughts… One of the things to check would be the nut that is center line aft. This nut holds the two cables with a small plastic assembly on the inside of the pedestal. It should be tight. It is also difficult to align during installation, use prayer and possibly a metal coat hanger to assist. The other option may be the wire linkage, either one of the engine cables, which would be more likely or the steering cable, I believe less likely. The access to inspect would be from either the top by removing the compass, two screws on the stainless cover of the forward part of the compass and then four long bolts hold it in place. Pretty straight forward. The other inspect point would be to crawl to the cutout under the pedestal. This is the not so seamless part. I would guess one of the engine cables is hitting the side. Of note, much of the entire assembly should be lubricated once a year to ensure you gain maximum life expectancy. The end of the engine cables use something with Teflon in it. Steering cable itself use whatever you choose and simple 30 wt will work to wipe down the cables… Hope this helps.

Also, take a look at the assembly you have on the Edson e-site

Surf around to find your model pedestal and some of the drawings give you a pretty good idea of what the mechanics look like inside the unit you have.
