We are curious as to the average speeds typhoon owners are getting. Please let us know your speed in light and moderate winds with which sail combinations. Also what heavy wind tactics work for you. Carl loves you! Thanks, Paul and John.

Average Typhoon Speeds

Re: Average Typhoon Speeds
We were sailing a weekender that was loaded with camping gear and about 10-15 gallons of water in her belly, and 2 adults on board.Slovenian Bros. wrote: We are curious as to the average speeds typhoon owners are getting. speed in knots, assuming seas of less than 3 ft:
Wind Avg speed
0-5 < 2
5-10 3
10-15 3.5-4
15-20 4-4.5
over 20 knots we'd change sails from genoa and full main to working jib & main (and make 3.5-4.5) unless we were running, in which case we could make 4 knots with just a genoa. Top speed for us was probably 5 knots and not maintained for any length of time...
Heavier wind tactics included a double reef main & working jib for pointing, reaching (we slid a lot, though) or running under main (reefed) & working jib or just the jib. We were probably a little overloaded aft, as the water tank was under the cockpit sole and she had her butt in the water when we stocked up and got on board...as a consequence, she tended to 'squirm' under heavy winds and we could compensate by running with just a jib.
