Yamaha 6hp long shaft in Cape Dory 25?

Post by Bill Coogan »

Has anyone tried to install a Yamaha 6hp long shaft in a Cape Dory 25?
The important question: Will it fit????

Kind of an indirect YES. I owned an Allied Greenwich 24 a few years ago that came with an 8HP long-shaft 4-stroke Yamaha.
The Greenwich became the CD25 when CD purchased and then modified the molds.

The Yamaha fit fine but I quickly sold it for a much smaller, lighter engine. Less is more. You can drive that hull with a British Seagull Forty Plus.

However, one bit of caution. These are all old boats and the engine mount may have been modified, moved, replaced, etc.
Just measure the height of the engine from the inside top of the bracket to the top of the engine cover to make sure it will clear the hatch. Bigger problem is always the fore-aft location, so check that too.

The Allied Greenwich was lengthened about a foot to become the Cape Dory 25. I believe the lengthening took place in the lazarette area, and I wonder whether alterations were made to the well.

i just purchased and installed a tohatsu 6hp sail drive package.

long shaft
big pitched prop
and
it was perfect it.

just a slight scratch on the engine cover from the overhead lazerette hatch chafing slightly.

tohatsu moved the fwd reverse shift lever to the front of the engine.

picked it up from dick butler of star marine in st pete at a good value.

he prepped and shipped and at minimal cost.

check it out at www.tohatsu.com

With a very slight adjustment I was able to fix the "slight chafing" in my 1981 CD25. You could not find a more perfect engine, perfect amount of power, very quiet for long trips, and good MPGs.

Fair winds.

Was that the Tohatsu or the Yamaha 6HP?

It was a Nissan, which replaced a older Yamaha 2-stroke. But the main difference between the tohatsu and the Nissan is the sticker. They are the same engine.

The mercury 6 h.p. 4 stroke is also the same as the tohatsu and Nissan.
