The tiller handle on the 5hp Honda moves in a 90 degree arc above and a 90 degree arc below from the horizontal operating position. As such I am able to maneuver it into the opening between cockpit and motor well. In this position the hatch cover can be closed completely without any problem. So, yes it does store in the motor well, but by protruding out through the opening into the cockpit. With my old Evinrude, the motor tiller didn't move down so it couldn't be maneuvered into the opening. The results was having the tiller sticking up in a way that the hatch would not close when in use. It would (Evinrude), however, fold back to the rear of the motor head to allow the hatch to closed when moored.
I am very pleased with the 5hp Honda in all respects.
Hope this helps.

I may have missed this and apologize if I'm asking you to repeat anything, but: (1) are you able to operate the Honda with the hatch cover down; and (2) is the f-n-r control on the tiller such that you can change the prop's direction without opening the hatch? Thanks, John, s/v "Star" (CD25)

I operate my 5hp Honda with hatch closed. It took only minor modifications- putting vents on the Honda engine cover. My 5hp has the shift lever on the side so I open the hatch to shift. The 8hp has lever on front of engine so it probably could be shifted with hatch closed. I only need to shift when leaving or entering my slip so it isn't a problem. I have on occassions reached inside the opening (between cockpit and motor well)to shift without any problem. bill
