We went sailing on a light wind day and I let my guard down. While dropping the Main I did not secure my halyard end. I looked down no line. I looked up, line still coiled but fifteen feet up. I grabbed a boat hook but it was several feet short. What to do? Climb on the boom? Ummm, no. Then I remembered Duct tape. I grabbed the second hook, taped both together and hooked the hoisted line. Problem solved and old lesson relearned.

Indeed.
Duct Tape or a vise grip takes you a long way there!
Don't forget the WD in case you want it to move!

I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Let's face it. Whether we admit it or not, at one time or another, we all do something stupid on the water. How we get ourselves out of it is what matters. In my case, I didn't have an anchor light, so I ran an LED lantern up to the top of the mast using the jib halyard without first attaching a downhaul. This was my first overnight on my former CD25. Imagine my dismay when I woke up the next morning and looked up.

I had one near miss with a halyard end and then decided to put all the ends through the center of the cleats and tie a stopper knot. You are far less likely to lose the shackled end which I always either leave attached to the sail, hold in my hand or fasten to a fixed point on the boat.
They can flop around all they want until I do something but I never have to worry about losing them, Steve.
