Thanks for all the help many of you have given me as I begin the light restoration of my new ('83) CD 30 Cutter. I am putting in a new water heater and batteries in the starboard cockpit locker. The inside area is painted a tan (almost flesh) color. Has anyone found an over the counter paint product that matches fairly well. Not looking for perfect, but want to paint that area of the locker and have it blend with the other lockers and areas of the bilge. Many thanks! - Russell Rau

Re: It's not paint......
Russ,
If you can avoid it, don't paint it. The color is molded into the jellcoat of the fiberglass. Try a product called "Grease Off". It will really clean it up and it is easy to use. Spray it on, hit it a couple of licks with a scrub brush on a stick, wash off and pump out the bilge. I know, I just did it to Hanalei because I had to have the engine pulled. The bilge and area between the lazzerette areas was a mess, but a little Grease Off and a few minutes with a hose and she looks almost like new.
The boys at the shipyard were a little amazed because the finish of the bilge is the same as on the outside of the boat, jellcoat and all - a mark of fine craftsmanship by Cape Dory.
No, I wouldn't paint it, you would have to maintain it, just clean what ya got.

Re: New Owner - Paint Recommendations - CD 30 Cutter
Hanalei is right the inside is actually a gelcoat type coating usually applied by brush at the yard.It can be recoated with a simmiliar type material available through any yard or premixed without the hardener catalyst from any fiberglass supply outfit. I did the entire interior including stringers, bilge, storage etc on my CD 33 poweryacht (dove grey)but had to lightly sand first. Of course if it's really grubby you'll have to clean first anyway.Awlgrip is what I used and it is beautiful and durable.I did this just to be anal, but then I have 14 coats of clear awl-brite on the teak and holly sole, and the same on the cutting board.
