Leaking Stanchions

Post by Russell S. Rau »

More basic questions from a new CD 30 owner. Thanks to all the input, I will not attempt to polish bronze. Green looks better already. Several stanchions are leaking. On the mounts it looks like some are through bolted and others are just screws. How did CD typically attach the stanchions? Is the best advice remove and reseal holes and base with say 5200? Please help with the best procedure. Have no fear, I am moving on to more fun issues in the next several weeks. Thanks - Russell Rau

I wouldn't use 5200

5200 is a powerful adhesive. It's not needed for this application, because the base is held mechanically by bolts. If the previous fellow used 5200, you'll have a hell of a time getting the stanchion loose. Instead, use a good sealant.

Leaking stanchions are fairly common with most boats. Over time, sealants fail from misuse or accidental overmovement. The stanchions on the CD30 are all attached (or should be) with through-bolts, and backing plates on all. The bases have a recessed gasket..with an O-ring inset in it. This 'should' be all that is ncessary to keep the seal, if the bolts are torqued down evenly. However, I sealed the bolt hole itself, and the inside of the O-ring perimeter with 3M's 101 sealant. Then torqued the bolts down while my wife held a breaker bar on the nut down below.
This has held for 4 years since doing on 6 stanchions in the center section of the boat. We have more torquing on our system than you probably would have, as we use a heavy canvas tarp, hoisted over the lowered mast, then pulled tight around the hull/bilge area. This tends to pull in on the stanchion tops a bit, which would loosen that base if it were not well mounted.

Not a fun job, but it saves the core from a soaking which would be a worse job to repair.

Cheers! and congrats on the fine choice of vessel!

Larry, are you sure stanchions go through cored area?

Post by Russell »

On the CD 36, the deck core ends about six inches from the edge of the deck, ie, just short of the deck lip. This "safe perimeter" is wider along some portions of the nose and stern. Most of the deck hardware is in this "safe perimeter," including cleats, chain plates, stanchion bases, and toe-rail bolts. Bolts for the last three go through both deck and hull lip. Bolts should be sealed regardless, to prevent leaks.

Well, you pose a good question here. Now that you mention it, I saw only fiberglass and resin in those holes..not coring. That would be a rather poor way to do it at any rate, as you would need a collar or spacer in the screw holes to prevent crushing the coring. No, you are absolutely right..it IS NOT cored in that area. But the hole still needs to be sealed off, as exposed glass fiber will wick the water up like a straw.
Good Catch! Sorry for the confusion folks..it's the end of the season here, and it's too soon for me I guess.

Cheers!

DO NOT use 5200

Post by Leo A. MacDonald »

Hi Russell,

I concur with the recommendation not to use 3M 5200. 5200 is with very few exceptions ONE WAY.

Try what Larry recommended or 3m 4200.

Larry,
I heard that Marquette(sp?) got 22 inches of snow the other day. That would be a pretty good indication of the END of the season! Sorry it had to happen so soon.

P.S. The cradle photos are still in the works.

Dave,

We ran into a white-out blizzard 12 miles from the boat after watching the coolest mini-thunderhead form on the lake from the rising warm air, then dump it's load on nearby towns off of the anvil front section. We had forecast 10-20 in. of snow, with scattered water spouts (first time hearing that one), and 30-40 kts. It was a powerful storm, and it blew like hell Friday evening, Sat. all day and Sunday morning. We got the 20 in. but it melted quickly. We debated going out a dozen times, but the fireplace felt so good, and the wind felt so cold that we chickened out. We will be out next weekend for the three days we usually take off..and pull out is the following weekend. She is over all right. Talk about a big bang for an ending! heh..
The guy that wants the pictures of the cradle is still able to use them if they can be gotten soon. I wish I could lay my hands on the originals. I guess we should have just started a web site and thrown it all in there to be safe, heh? Ratz.
Cheers!
