Cape Dory Senior "Bimin"

Post by David1952 »

Has anyone who has a CD "Senior" tried to add a bimini ...is there enough room under
the boom...could I lift the boom by using a reef point? ....any thoughts or suggestions
would be appreciated.
Thanks, David

Hi David,
It seems to me that the space is insufficient. I think of boom height as it's clear to gybe if you are sitting.

The gooseneck is a fixed position. Would it work to change the gooseneck position, and modify the mainsail?

Hi David,

I own a CD22 which should be similar to your set up.

I don't see an easy way to raise the boom.

On my boat, the slot in the mast used for removing the main sail is maybe a foot above the boom. When I reef, this location works great for the sail slides to fall out of the mast slot while I pull down the main for a reef. Raising the boom will make it harder for the sail slides to fall out and raising the boom too far will block the slot entirely.

I'm not saying you couldn't cut a new slot at a higher location, but that, most likely comes with its own problems.

I guess the first thing you need to do is decide exactly where you want the bimini. Then figure how much higher your boom should go. Then, if one reef gives you that much room, tuck in the reef, raise the boom, and go for a sail to see how she does.

The bad news is you will loose some speed, the good news is you don't have to wonder when is a good time to tuck in your first reef!

Good luck with it all, I'd like to see the finished product.
