Cape Dory Bronze Plates
Has there been any progress on finding a supplier for the Bronze Name Plates that we all seem to be interested in? I too would love to have one.

Re: Cape Dory Bronze Plates
I missed the original question but have had 2 "bronze" plaques made for 2 different boats. Both from a trophy shop. One from the kind of (gold colored with black print under) from the same kind of stuff plaques honoring various achievements are made. I also priced engraved bronze and brass and even had one made; however, it appears it's much harder to get the broad and deep kind of look for the print on that kind of material. For the second boat, another shop used a brass plaque on which was "sprayed" via some technique dark and solid/heavy letters. They looked better than engraved but were on top of the metal. There's a technique whereby the "print" is imposed on the brass. It was good. Don't remembe the price but under $25 for the second; under $5 for the first. I put down the boat's name, its manufactuerer, its length, and its documentaiton number. Mike

Re: Cape Dory Bronze Plates
Subsequent to the earlier postings on this subject I made an e-mail inquiry to Spartan Marine. I informed them that there was a significant interest by many CD owners that frequent this board in having bronze hull ID plaques cast to replace the original plastic plaques. I informed them that some CD owners had been in contact with Bristol Bronze about having the mold made and the plaques cast. I told them that a positive response was made by Bristol.Richard Gelfand wrote: Has there been any progress on finding a supplier for the Bronze Name Plates that we all seem to be interested in? At that point I asked if they would have any interest in making the mold and casting the plaques themselves since they still manufacture virtually all CD bronze fittings.
Unfortunately as of this date I have not had the courtesy of a reply from them. Perhaps if all of you that are interested in a bronze plaque were to write or call them they may be more receptive to considering the idea of putting the plaques into limited production.
Bristol Bronze
Bristol Bronze will begin the casting and fabrication of the new hull plaques. We'll post order info as soon as we have it.

Re: Cape Dory Bronze Plates
What I did (easy way out) was to remove the plastic placque from the boat, brought it home and applied 5 coats of gold glitter model paint to the raised portion being careful not to get any paint on the black background. It looks good and seem to be lasting.

Re: Cape Dory Bronze Plates
Greetings CD'ers,
I have been in contact with Bristol Bronze for approx 1 year. Roger Winowski (owner) is willing to produce said plates and has gone so far of sending me a copy of a Builders Plate that he replicated for a "Handy Cat" (mfg by "Cape Dory Co. Inc." of W. Bridgewater, Mass.)
What we now need is for someone with a real bronze Builders Plate to send it to Roger as the basis for making a mold. When he has the bronze plate OR a detailed drawing (the more detail the better the finished product) he will, as Cathy said, " . . . begin the casting and fabrication of the new hull plaques."
If anyone would like to loan the Builders Plate to Roger or do a detailed drawing and send it to Roger, we could get this project of the ground.
If your really interested in suppling the loaner to Roger or can do a drawing PLEASE give me a call / e-mail.

Re: Cape Dory Bronze Plates
Leo,
Thanks for your work on this.
Parfait is without a plaque, or I might loan it to Bristol Bronze. I can understand why others might not be willing to remove their plate and send it off. If we have no artists, maybe we have a photographer or someone who could do a "rubbing" to get the details down on paper? A rubbing has the advantage of recording the dimensions as well as the image. A photo which include a ruler or tape measure would also work and would have the advantage that it might be usable directly. Another thought is to scan a plaque and ruler. Does anyone have a loose plaque?
Is it time to collect a list of potential buyers and negotiate a group order?

Ken Coit

Re: Cape Dory Bronze Plates
What about someone making a mold of their plate to send to Bristol Bronze??? Someone willing to spend some time making a latex or wax imprint of the plate then using the imprint to "cast" a plaster replica. If someone is willing to do this, check w/ Bristol Bronze on their requirements. Also, is the plastic plate any different from the bronze one supplied by Cape Dory. If they are the same, then either could be used ot make the master.
Bronze Builder's Plates - Latest info.
Current estimate from Bristol Bronze is approx. $25.00 to $30.00 per plate.
We have found a Captain willing to lend their Builder's Plate for mold production purposes.
Stay tuned.

Re: Cape Dory Bronze Plates
Know this is slightly off the mark, but while we are talking about bronze casting, I have been watching the board for the past year and there ways seems to be intertest in bronze portlights, for those of us who are port light impaired. Last summer I talked with Bristol Bronze and they were intetested, but it would take the same effort on someone's part, ie take off their old plastic rings and send them to Bristol Bronze to make a mold off of. Has anyone gone farther than what I have learned?

Did Bristol bronze offer any ballpark cost estimate?
