"Evergreen" Heading North - Summer/Fall 2013

Post by Evergreen »

Good day to all:

This summer "Evergreen" will be heading back to the Eastern Canadian Maritimes for the sailing season.

We were wondering if anyone else might also be going North?

Updates will be posted as things develop.

Also we have established a new blog for the upcoming season. If interested see the link below the signature.

Hope to see you out there.

Fair winds,
Philip & Sharon

Re: Happy Canada Day

Post by Evergreen »

Hello from Canada:

Happy Canada Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://northernexposurein2013.blogspot.com/

As of today we have been underway for one month. And on that note I will say that the blog is finally up to date (until tomorrow). Enjoy the photos as you travel with us from Maine, up the Nova Scotia coast, and on to the west coast of Newfoundland, Quebec, and now Labrador. There is only one post per page. Click the "older posts" link on the bottom right of each page in order to get to them. You may also click on any photo to enlarge it. Enjoy.

Best wishes to everyone, P & S

Love all the photos! One day I really have to cruise up in those parts. How are you finding the solar does up in those latitudes?

Re: Solar/Wind Setup

Post by Evergreen »

Good to hear from you Russell:

I could not be more happy with our wind & solar generating setup!!! We never need to plug in and never need to run the motor anymore. That is wonderful up this way because we are either at anchor or at wharfs that often have no electricity. Mind you we keep our electrical needs to a minimum. Solar works very well --- even generates power on foggy and cloudy days. The Superwind has been earning his keep also this year as it has been unusually windy. The panels work so well that I have taken to turning the Superwind off occasionally (especially when it is going to blow hard) in order the save the bearings.

That said --- I think a diesel heater is in Evergreen's future. It has been unusually cold so far this year --- In the 40s in the cabin every morning. Even the locals say it has been windy and cold and they are used to that sort of thing. There is a Force 10 propane heater mounted on the bulkhead (I think that was standard in the CD36s) but it was never connected. I am going to "fire that out" (Canadian talk for "throw away") and replace it with a diesel unit since propane is not readily available in many places but diesel always is. It will also be nice in October back in Maine.

Thanks again for all the advice that you gave us when we were researching our solar/wind setup!! It made all the difference.

I look forward to when our tacks cross. It is bound to happen sooner or later since when we retire we will try the snowbird thing at least twice.

Best wishes to you,

PS: Ice moved into the harbor last night --- not good --- had me very worried. Hopefully the wind will blow it out today.

Wow, I assumed you already had a diesel heater, with all the cruising you do up there! I put in an Espar a few years ago and have been very happy with it. A bit harder to install then a bulkhead heater, but the CD36 really does not have a good spot for a well installed bulkhead heater (which should be near the sole, not up above the setee like the factory installed them).

Re: Back In Nova Scotia

Post by Evergreen »

Hello:

We have safely returned to Nova Scotia after a brief visit to Labrador, and having rounded Newfoundland ("The Rock") instead. Our plans to explore the coast of Labrador were a bust this year. It turned out not be a good year for such an expedition --- the bottom line: Too much ice.

Now that we are more "connected" I have been working on updating the blog. Lack of internet access had limited this activity while we were in the north. So, despite that fact that the blog is no where near up to date, you can still enjoy some of the new photos that I have been adding.

If you are interested, the blog link is below our signature.

Hopefully, we will be back in Maine within the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Best wishes to everyone.

Hello:

We are back in Maine.

I have been working at getting our blog caught up now that we have fairly good internet access. You might be interested in checking it out --- especially the photos of the southwest coast of Newfoundland. The link is below our signature.

Enjoy

We Have Come Full Circle

Post by Evergreen »

Good Day:

We have come full circle and our blog of photos documenting our trip is up to date with the exception of a few captions that must be added. The link to the blog is below our signature.

We did not achieve our original goal of exploring the northern Labrador coast this year (due to the ice conditions) but on the other hand we did visit many beautiful places and meet countless wonderful people. We take away fantastic memories and the expectation that we will return to these places in the near future.

Enjoy and best wishes, Philip & Sharon
