Is anyone encountering problems with their outboard water cooling system clogging because their motor
sits in the water in all season? My motor sits in the well in Lake water all season. When it is time for haul out, it has become clogged to the point that the water cooling system fails. One year I replaced the impeller, the second year I replaced a clogged tube. This is the second year I have had to replace my motor with a borrowed one ( thank goodness for good sailing friends!) in order to haul out. Is anyone else running into this problem? Has anyone found a way to pull the motor out of the well easily between sails? I fear that buying a new motor ( mine is an 86 Johnson 9.9) may not solve the problem.

I have a CD25 with a Mariner 8 in salt water from June to October and have not had your problem. Once in a while the tube gets clogged with glunk. Each time I use the boat I clean the tube with a stiff piece of copper wire to insure a steady stream of water. Perhaps fresh water makes a difference.

I use the Tempo clear anti-foulent and the motor sits in the well from
April to November. If growth starts, I just remove the motor and scrub the prop with a stiff bristle brush.

My outboard, a Yamaha 9.9 sits in freshwater all season. I used the anti-foulent like Don on my CD26. I do get clogging, but rather than pulling the motor, I take a scrub brush on a pole, climb out on my swim ladder and scrub the intake on the side of the lower unit. That seems to be where my clogging occurs. I do this every time before I go out, maybe this prevents the surface gunk from getting sucked up inside.Don Carr wrote: I use the Tempo clear anti-foulent and the motor sits in the well from

The answer for us turned out to be a smaller engine. 6 hp Suzuki engine. Pushes well in every condition we have run into in 2 years.

I have a 7.5 Hp Merc. I leave my boat in salt water from mid may to end of sept. I've also had cloging problems. I had to replace the water pump this past summer. What an experience that was! I found that I just have to clean the water intake on the lower unit about every two weeks. The only other solution is to kill all the alge in the lake. Well, at least your not alone with this problem.DG wrote: Is anyone encountering problems with their outboard water cooling system clogging because their motor
