This is a repeat of my post of last spring(s). I'm selling rudder shaft bearing/seals for Ty's
"The seal for the rudder shaft is a bearing common to truck air seats and other low speed uses. The bearing is made by Thompson-Nyliner (distributed in the NY area by a place in L.I. ( I forget where). T-N can give you the name. It is a 3/4" diam. plastic bearing with flange.
When I bought mine 3 years ago I had to buy a sample pack of 25 for around $54 plus shipping and handling - I sold a few at Beaton's yard in Mantoloking, NJ and kept most of them (if I live to be 300 I'll get use of all of them). The unfortunate part is that most of the problem is the scale and corosion on the rudder shaft itself, which is hard to access. I used # 320 sandpaper to clean the shaft one spring, and next spring had to do it all over again (I do have plenty of bearings). If you want a couple let me know, and figure out how you would want to get them (I suggest you send me a small pre-paid priorty mail box. The box is about 4" x 6" x 1") How about $4 a bearing?"
If interested, send box to:
Bill Bloxham
286 Periagua Lane
Mantoloking, NJ 08738
If I run out (unlikley)I will return your box, money and try to dig up the address of the distributer. Then you can go into the parts business. Or sell them for cat toys - mine love 'em.

Re: Yet More Shameless Commerce (Ty)
I have a '70 Ty. I just bought it so I haven't not familiar with the rudder works. However, I can feel quite a lot play in the shaft (i.e. clunking around when tacking etc.). Would the parts you are offering fix this problem? If so, please reserve me whatever I need - ha, easy sale!

Perhaps.
The bearing will help any lateral play at the top of the shaft by the tiller base. It will also prevent some water intake when the rear of the cockpit sole in below the waterline. What it cannot help is:
1. rudder lift - the rudder has between .5" and 1.5" vertical play (usually not any kind of a problem that I am aware of) and 2. gudgen/shaft wear at the bottom of the rudder - some have written of putting a bushing here on keel-hung rudder boats.
Good luck. We have fine boats.

Re: Yet More Shameless Commerce (Ty)
The tiller does move laterally. It actually feels like there's something broken down there because its not smooth. All I can say is that it "clunks"! However, it doesn't leak at all and there's no obvious vertical movement, although I never really pulled up on it. What I'd like to do is get the boat out in a few weeks and check it out. Hopefully, you won't be sold out by then.Bill Bloxham wrote: Perhaps.

Re: Yet More Shameless Commerce (Ty)
Probable order of investigation:
1. Partial bearing in tube
2. Barnacles on rudder post
3. excessive paint buildup on shaft
Let us know if none of these work. It is not likely that you have a broken rudder, but it could happen on foam filled rudder boats. I have never seen a Ty with that problem, though. Most of our problems are the same problems everyone shares.
