The raw water seacock supplying the cooling water to my YSM8 engine on my 1980 CD27 is beginning to stick very badly. It almost takes a pair of pliers to open and close the seacock and I don't think its opening all the way at that. Seems like plenty of water is coming out the exhaust in the transom but I'm getting worried that if I can't open the seacock far enough eventually I could be lookin' at a fried engine. I've tried to lubricate the seacock but it hasn't helped much. I'm sure the problem is from salt build up and I'd like to just take the seacock apart and tend to it properly. But to do that I'm pretty sure I'll have to haul the boat which I really don't want to do at this time. Does anyone have any suggestions for even a temporary fix for the seacock while the boat is still in the water? Obviously I'll do a more permanent job when the boat is hauled for the winter.
Thanks to all.

Sticking raw water seacock, CD27

Re: Sticking raw water seacock, CD27
On our CD27 the seacock for the seawater intake was a KINGSTON cock. The handle is shaped a bit like a fishing sinker (long tear drop). If you have the same kind of unit, you may be able to loosen the valve without completely removing the rotating piece. I think that there is a double nut on the end of the shaft. Try backing off a quarter turn. This should ease the operation. Not too loose or the cock will weep.
As I recall there isn't much clearance. Use a mirror to check the the fasteners, and good luck.

Re: Sticking raw water seacock, CD27
There have many postings about barnacles cloging the various seacocks and how the best method is to jump into the water w/ a brush and teh seacock open. They also will shove some seacock grease onto the thru hull w/ the seacock closed and then work teh seacock. Search teh board, it was not that long ago.
Re: Sticking raw water seacock, CD27
Mitchell,
The seacock on my CD27 is also a Kingston cock. As you said the handle is very short, akin to a teardrop. I solved the problem (temporarily until winter haul out) by buying a 6 inch long piece of pipe with a 1/2 inch diameter. Just fits over the teardrop handle and there is clearance for the 6 inch length. The extra leverage the lever arm provides opens and closes the seacock with ease. Moving the valve thru its full range actually loosened it up a little and I repeated it about 20 times while lubricating it. I wouldn't have tried this (with much force anyway) on a "frozen seacock" but because this one was just "sticky" it worked like a charm without risking snapping the "teardrop" off. Water is gushing out of the exhaust in the transom...so I feel a helluva lot better when I need to use "Yanmar Wind".
Thanks everyone for the help!
