Is Lake Champlain a good place to sail with a cd31?

Post by Mike Davis »

My family is thinking about purchasing a home on Lake Champlain. I am wondering if it is a good place to sail a cd 31?. Is the lake good for that size boat? Has anyone with a cd sailed on Lake Champlain?

I've sailed my CD 28 for 20 years on Lake Champlain and it hasn't gotten old yet. There is plenty of good sailing and cruising to be had. Where on the lake are you buying a home? Besides sailing your CD anywhere is better than not sailing.

We are going up to the Adirondacks next month and will explore the Lake Champlain area. Not sure where we want to purchase a country house, but we would love to use our boat on the lake. It currently is located in Brooklyn, NY. We want to spend a lot of our time up north. We are considering the Vermont side as well. We need a good marina for our boat. I guess that will be a factor when it comes to finding our country home.

If you have a CD-31 on Lake Champlain it would seem that you would already have a home there. Maybe not if you plan to ski a lot.

Moving your boat there would be a perfect way to spend time in the area. This would give you a chance to see in what area or state you would prefer to buy a home. Once you purchased a property you could move the big boat to the Maine coast and get a Typhoon for the lake.

You can never have to many boats, Steve.

A CD31 would be a fine boat for Lake Champlain. We chartered a Hunter 30 back about 12 years ago (before we had Mahalo) and had a great time. Back 20+ years ago we lived in VT and sailed smaller boats. Lake Champlain is a really nice lake.

Yes a CD31 will be fine on the Lake. My father sailed a lot with a range of CD28,CD30, CD33 and a Typhoon. Bruce Hill Yacht Sales, Inc (VT) was an active dealer of CD and he still operative.

Keeping a boat on the Vermont side was more costly then the NY side at that time. I'm not sure if it still true. I keep my Contessa on the NY side, next year i will be near the canadian-US border in Rouses Point, the scenery is best at the other end of the lake. I choose to do less road trip and more sailing, it's a compromise.

Hi Mike, welcome to lake champlain. My wife and I sail a CD36, with a CD10 dingy, on the lake. We live in Benson,Vt which is on the very south end of the lake. A CD 31 would fit right in with the 30+ other Cape Dories. The scenery and sailing are both excellent and we rarely have fog and never have to worry about lobster pots!
We hope to meet you soon and perhaps have a Cape Dory float-in. Fair Winds, Doug.

Hi John,

I don't talk much but i'm looking at the Cape Dory Board every day, it's a kind of joy therapy opposite the work.

If i think about the summer? You bet! This is what i already did:

I have reserve a motel in Plymouth MA, i sail there every spring for the Melonseed Solstice Regatta, a Melonseed is a small catboat(melonseed.com).

I bring back my sailboat to a marina near my home, last year i did too much of car trip, it was not fun at all. Now i wil be at a half hour of my house and i plan to sail in the afternoon in the week

I add a roller on my CO26, my wife din't liked at all when i had to go raise or remove my sail (I cross my finger in hoping that this will help her with her fear).

And i'm a bit crazy but i have in my briefcase a set of maps of the lake Champlain, i like to look at them, like i said it's crazy because i sailed a lot with my father near my new marina and i know well the sector but it's still, i like to look at the maps, i think about where i will take a lunch...It's a real disease.

Champlain is a great place to sail almost any boat. When the Chesapeake is dead calm and broiling in mid-August, we vacation at a family camp on Grand Isle in the middle of the lake between Plattsburgh NY and Burlington VT. We sail our 15' dinghy at every opportunity back and forth across the lake - it never gets old. In addition to gorgeous vistas, the Adirondacks often serve up some serious breeze! The little open boat puts me back in touch with the essence of sailing in a way Yankee can't - it's a healthy change of pace.

Sailing the lake are boats of all descriptions, many of Canadian registry, whose skippers seem oblivious to the rules of the road, I must say.... At that time of year the southerly migration is getting underway and it can be quite a parade.

You might try visiting the lake before making a permanent commitment. But the sailing will not disappoint you. The trip up the Hudson and through the canal is a goal of mine, someday when time permits. Wiring modifications will be needed beforehand though to simplify stepping and unstepping the mast.
