Looking at Typhoon

Post by Diane Andrews »

Am looking at a Typhoon currently located in Florida. Needs sails, hardware, hull looks good, but not sure what to look for when checking out those balsa core situations. Boat in water for 4 years, water in bilge now, small amount. Asking 4,500.00. What is fair in pricing a boat of this age and situation?

Diane,

When looking at a Typhoon I would check the following: 1)Cabin top sag under the mast, look for loose shrouds and any deformation in the cabin top. This is easily fixed with a post down below. 2)See if any hatches or vents have been added and check for deck flex in those areas, this would signify soggy balsa core, mine did have some soggy core though without any deck flex so it is not guaranteed. 3)Check the chainplate area under the deck for signs of water stains (deck Leaks.

Even with a little problems in these areas the Ty is a worthy candidate for purchase. Other things to look for are a trailer and motor in good shape and any indents in the hull due to improper storage. For $4500 you should get a sound boat with trailer that only needs wood work.

Good Luck,
Paul

Diane,

I second Paul's comments.

I think that 45K for the boat you are describing is too much. The boat needs sails, that can run you into several hundred dollars.

Also, does the boat have the following:
Outboard
O/B bracket
Through hull fittings that are not leaking
Cushions in decent shape
Woodwork not broken

The above is just a partial list, but any of those things missing can be costly. To give you an idea, I bought my '75 Typhoon two years ago for $42K. The 3 major things needing work were replacing the through-hulls and seacocks, fixing cracks in wood and Cetol-ing (refinishing), and repainting hull. Everything else was in good to very good shape. My boat came with a suit of sails and an outboard under 4 years old.

If you're very fond of this example of a Typhoon, ask the seller to bring down the price -- drastically!
