Hi Don,

On our CD28 we use a length of shock cord, and a twist-lock-tiller- extention. Set them up so they oppose each other. The shock cord has a loop in each end. Place one loop over the end of the tiller and the other loop over a cleat. Extend the tiller extention and set it against the coaming (to the same side of the cockpit as the shock cord). The adjustment angle is quite fine, it can be cast off for quick course change, and works on either side of the cockpit.

Take a length of line, cleat one end, lead the line to the tiller. Take a turn or around the tiller, then tie the line off to itself using a rolling hitch. If there's weather helm, a line on the weather side is sufficient.

The rolling hitch will slide easily when you want it to, but will hold tight if the line is under strain. So there are no limits to the adjustments you can make. Total cost is zero, which is the best part. If you need to, rig a line on both sides to hold the tiller in place. Either way, it's easy to slide the hitch and take back control of the tiller.

As noted there are many ways of lashing the tiller. I use a device called the "tiller-stay" made by a pleasant fellow named Robin Teasler. It's very convenient and an easy installation. He has a photo of my actual rig on his website, www.tillerstay.com. He can usually be found at the boat shows too.

This is an easy to use tiller holder when you are not using the genoa.
Place both genoa sheet blocks as far aft as possible. Hitch a line to the tiller, over the coaming, through the block, across the cockpit to the opposite block and tie it off to the tiller. The friction of the line against the coaming holds the tiller at any angle.
