Depth and GPS recommendation?
Moderator: Jim Walsh
Re:Compass Interference
We tested the GPS location for compass interference before installation and found none at the chosen location. Have not seen any change in compass behavior since installation. Your mileage may vary.

I have a working DS45 display (no transducer) if you're interested. I was sort of thinking I'd find a transducer for it sometime down the road, but who knows if that will ever happen. Let me know if you're interested.barfwinkle wrote:Holy Crap Man I love this installation My Standard Horizon DS-45 has given up the ghost and I now have a 4 1/2" hole in the port bulkhead. Either the 441S or the 541S flush mount kit will fix the issue! YES Thank you for the pics

Installation Instructions
Here are the installation instructions for the transducer we used. We more or less eyeballed the angle by using a small level and rotating the top unit until it was level. We attached the lower part to the hull a few days ago using 3M silicone. Today I filled it with anti-freeze, screwed the top in and voila! The unit was measuring the depth at the dock to the inch. The people at the Riverhead West Marine were very knowledgeable and helpful with advice on the installation.

Stupid question for jneely.
How did you ensure the your cuts were level? Measure up from the bridge deck?

They give you a template to paste onto the bulkhead. We used a level to make sure it was even before we pasted it on. As I recall the template came with its own adhesive, but I am not 100% sure of that.

I would always check prices with this guy. He beats the listed price, usually by a bit. I have saved a bunch of bucks by buying from him directly. Met him at the Anna boat show this last fall.

Re: Depth and GPS recommendation?
I have the GPS closer to the compass than suggested by Garmin, but I have noted no interference on any course heading. Before we cut our hole we placed the GPS next to the compass and turned it on and off a number of times. When we did not see any changes to the compass reading we hoped for the best and cut the hole. I am very happy with the installation. When doing a test for the transducer location we had better luck when we greased the bottom of the transducer with some KY Jelly. The embarrassing part was asking the teenage girl in the drug store where I could find the stuff.
