at age 8 I was taught that all you need to do to remember the left/right, port/starboard and red/green is to count the letters. left has less letters then right , port has less letters then starboard and red has less letters then Green. Therefore left/port/red go together as do right/starboard/green. Yes I can still remember this after 40 years but need cheat sheets for my password, etc....
