CD31 Replacement Mast

Post by distand »

I recently looked at a CD31, Eastern Wings, that was damaged in a storm when it blew over off of it's stands. The boat is currently in a salvage yard in Mass. The force of the fall damaged the mast. Here is a picture of the damage that I'm aware of on the mast:

If anyone has any information on where I could find a used (or new) replacement mast and the approximate cost that would be appreciated. The cost of the mast, other repairs, cost to the salvage yard, replacement of missing items, hassle factor and transportation fees will determine whether or not this boat is a good deal for me.

I have also thought about repairing the mast but it seems a bit risky to me (would not want to worry about that constantly).

Thanks
Don

You might be able to order a news mast from Rig Rite but they have theorist customer service on the planet so it w.ill be a challenge. If that is the only damage though you can easily weld or rivet an aluminum section over the area. There should be a rigger or aluminum welder in your area that can assist.

Hi Don.Try Dwyer mast.Figure about $80.00/ft for the extrusion and if your handy you can swap all tHe hardware yourself. They are located in RI or CONN.Check out their website. There is a diagram to go by for size /diameter/and price.$80.00 might be on the high size.I ended up having mine filled with weld and that has worked after one year. Good luck pete

Also try Rigging solutions. Joe Mello 508 962 8964. Doyle sails in South Dartmouth have said good things about his knowledge. He would be a good sounding board to see if it could be SAFELY repaired. He is nearby in Mass. Let us know how you make out.

As posted above, this looks to be both repairable and replaceable.

Whatever you do, make sure that you don't create something that is uninsurable. If you decide to move forward with the boat, I would recommend talking this over with your planned insurance company before signing on the dotted line. If you have it repaired and your insurance company then decides it needs to be replaced, it can be significantly more expensive than you were planning.

Thank you for the thoughts regarding insurance. It's a good point and something that I am concerned about. As the boat was already totalled some insurance companies will not, as a matter of policy, provide a policy. Some will and they require a marine survey to certify the boat. A lot to think about and there are not many black and white answers on this topic.
