Sail Treatment

Post by Clay Stalker »

Greetings all,

Yes, I am still alive. On a lighter note, can anyone remember the name and address of that company that does the sail treatment? I seem to remember some discussion about that years ago and some folks thought it was a good buy and really made a difference in their old sails.....Rich and Melissa Abato....I think maybe they had it done? Cannot remember for sure....but need to do something to my Townie sails. Many thanks.

We used SailCare:
http://www.sailcare.com/

They can't work miracles but if the sails aren't completely blown out, they can repair and recoat. You will get at least a few extra years out of your sails. After a few years we eventually did buy new sails for Mahalo but we were happy with the SailCare service and the old sails are actually still very useable. Our new sails were made by Jasper & Bailey, they did a great job!

I second the Sailcare recommendation. I just washed and put away our Sea Sprite main that was redone 5-6 years ago. They still look great. It wasn't blown out, just "tired". They added a leech line and tidied up the batten pockets along with their re-resining process. Well worth the money. They have a fall special (or they have in the past) when you send them in by x date and they send them back in the spring. Worked great for us. Saved a little and didn't have to store them!

Regardless of where you are located the best of the best for sail cleaning and repair is
Hendrickson Sailmakers, Inc.
43 Norman Ave.
Riverside, NJ 08075
Tel: 856 764 0888
e-mail: sailmaker1@comcast.net

Richard Hendrickson, the owner and his lead man Chas, have been in business for many years and there is hardly a problem they cannot fix. Also they have been known to take in truck loads of sails for cleaning at the close of each sailing season - by spring every customer is sailing with a clean crisp sail.

Several years ago I took Parfait's main to Sailcare. They dropped lunch and hustled out to help bring it in, laid it out on their loft floor and did an assessment while I was standing there. I went in thinking I just wanted it clean. They shipped back what was a much better sail in terms of function and it was very clean and crisp. Actually, it is still in great condition as it spends most of its time on the V-berth. Their recommendations were great and being able to walk the sail with them was very helpful in deciding what I wanted in addition to cleaning, etc.
Keep on sailing,

I just got my 28 year old mainsail back from SailCare and couldn't be more pleased. It is like a new sail.

They repaired every worn part, added the Cape Dory 36 insignia and washed it till it was sparkling clean. Can't wait until spring to try it out.
Sail on
