Sandy's Victims

Post by Ldybg »

Raritan Yacht Clubs (Perth Amboy, NJ) lower buildings and yard were destroyed. All 30+ winter stored boats floated off their stands and the wave action pushed them into the buildings. My CD28 was a victim as well as a 2-time Bermuda Race winner.

Having trouble uploading pictures, will post when I can.

On the bright side, I had removed almost all gear to do a thorough cleaning this winter. If anyone is looking for sails, cushions, etc. I will post in the Sale pages.

Colleen Marie is in a heap in Atlantic Highlands and we cannot get to her 'til they stabilize the harbor.

She was knocked off her stands but we cannot tell how badly she's damaged because shes hidden from view.
No one is allowed into the harbor except maybe some press.

Jack Flannerys CD 30 looks like it is still on her stands.

But what a mess the harbor is. Check out:

Colleen Marie was just to the right of Carin.

I'll post some pics after she's put back on her stands.

I was finally able to get to Callipygian, our CD25D that was pulled out Friday morning before Sandy and stored at Dimiglio's in Mill Basin, Brooklyn. As the yard is some distance from Jamaica Bay around a corner of a narrow channel, I had hoped to avoid the surge. No such luck. According to the owners, some 40 boats were floated off their stands and piled around the yard. When I finally got there, they were in the process of picking up the boats and re-blocking them. From the owners truck I could see several scratches and abrasions along my hull, some deep gouges in the bottom and the transom looks like something was chafing against it for quite a while. There didn't appear to be any other damage to the rigging or top sides and I was not allowed to check the interior for spillage from the diesel tank or leaks from the port lights. It will probably be a week before I can make a more detailed inspection. I have opened a claim with BoatUS but don't expect an appraiser anytime soon. As I've only limited experience (3 years) as a boat owner, I don't know what else I should be doing or what other damage I might expect to find. I appreciate that in the scheme of things, these are low priority issues, but any suggestions for interim actions I might take would be appreciated.

A marina in Solomns's Island, Maryland that is no longer in business would dig a hole with their backhoe and place the boat in the hole. I think that is the only failsafe way to keep a boat from coming off their jack stand.

This is common practice in the Caribbean for hurricane season storage. But this would actually work against you in an area prone to storm surge as the boat would float off sooner being closer to sea level. The keel in a hole in the ground I have generally seen as protection from wind knocking the boat off its stands.

After some thought, I left Changing Channels on her mooring in the Navesink River at Fair Haven Yacht Works. She's fine as far as I can tell but I haven't gotten out to her yet. Lots of boats were tossed around the river so we shall see. Two boats lost from the mooring field. I'm guessing about 10+ boats on the hard were floated off into the river. Several power boats sunk at their slips.

My CD 25,"Omega", rode it out on mooring in Keyport harbor. Just had her pulled out today with no damage. I guess a Cape Dory is better off in the water than out, no matter what the conditions are. I am sorry for your loss.

Joel,
Yes, RYC had a few boats still on their moorings and were fine, a couple dig break free, but this time it was propably better to be in the water!

FWIW:
I've posted a list of gear I’ve been able to salvage from my 1977 CD 28 (#125) in the "For Sale" section. Some items are original (or came with the boat in 1999), others replaced. If there is something you’re interested in send me an email (driscoll610 [at] comcast [dot] net). I’m uploading pictures to: http://capedory28parts.shutterfly.com/
Some forum members have contacted me regarding items, they have first dibs.

Considering she went thru/over 5 other boats and a cinder block building, she faired pretty well, tough boats!

I thought some of you might be interested to see what happened to the waterfront in Perth Amboy, New Jersey where Dennis keeps his boat. Perth Amboy is on the Raritan bayshore all the way at the far western end of the bay at the confluence of the Raritan River and the Arthur Kill.
