Uh, oh!

Post by Bill Coogan »

About four weeks ago I began to notice a green stain spreading on the barrrels of the sea cocks that drain the cockpit on my CD22. More recently there has appeared a deep, brilliant blue stain on top of the green. Any guesses as to what's going on?

p.s. I have no zincs on the boat, because there are no dissimilar metals that come in contact with the water. All are bronze.

I get similar sreading of the same color from the interior on just one of the bronze ports on my CD 28. I think it is just the corrosion that builds up on the bronze dripping off. And by the way, I used 'scrubbing bubbles' on the head and some of it sprayed onto the seacock there and it did a great job of cleaning it up. Haven't tried it on the ports yet. Window cleaner with amonia seems to help clean that up some.

I have noticed it too it seems to disappear when exposed to the sun I imagine it is some kind of fungus

The stain you're seeing is NOT a fungus; it's a chemical reaction, involving conversion of some copper in the bronze alloy. This is a common occurence and not cause for alarm. However, it's my understanding that it's not necessary to have dissimilar metals in the water to have electrolytic destruction of bronze fittings below the waterline. Most marinas have lots of stray currents in the water from poor shorepower and onboard wiring. Zincs are a good idea unless you're on a mooring.

I agree with Don that the colors are not a fungus. I would guess that the two different colors are merely reflective of two different oxidation states of copper when forming the compound appearing on the bronze.
