After spending endless hours, days, weeks, months and years trying and using all kinds of products to clean first my 1980 CD-25 and for the last two years, my 1982 CD-33, I have discovered a product that takes out dirt, scum marks, tape residue marks(as in after varnishing your teak) with the least amount of effort and leaves the gelcoat shiny white without harming it. You can get it at NAPA auto stores. It is CASTROL Super Clean Heavy Duty -comes in a purple plastic container in gallon and quart sizes (approx. $7.50 a gallon) couldn't be cheaper! It used to be called "Purple"... You just spray it, let it sit for a couple of seconds, then brush gently with a cleaning brush, or for tougher stains and marks, use the gentlest sandpaper and off comes the dirt! Then hose it off and that's it! Label says it can also be used on canvas, stainless steel, and much much more. The results have delighted me and I wanted to share this with you all. It is ESPECIALLY GOOD for removing TAPE residue!

Cleaning topsides, etc.

Star brite also makes a wonderful product called Nonskid Deck Cleaner-costs around $6.00 at any marine store.
Just wet down the deck, squirt this stuff on the wet area, scrub with a fine brush (not coarse), let it sit for a couple of minutes, and then rinse it off!
Once you use it, you will wonder why you spent all that time in the past scrubbing down the deck!

Hi Zeida ;
The active ingredient in Castrol Super Clean is Sodium Metasilicate, which I believe is also an excellent teak cleaner. I think this was taken out of some teak cleaners because it wasn't environmentally friendly, but not having it drastically reduced the effectiveness of the cleaners. It's supposed to be corrosive, but very good if you follow the directions. Thanks for the tip!

Super clean is great stuff. I keep it 100% in a spray bottle and use it on my decks. It goes a long way using it like this. It also gets sprayed on the engine and around the bilge to keep everything clean. We also use it in the kitchen at my restaurant for heavy cleaning such as the metal filters in the hood and around the sink and stove. I just ordered some through my local hardware and it arrived in 2.5 gallon container for $19.99. For any one who has not tried this stuff just beware it is super slippery as well when sprayed on a deck.
