CD 27 Rigging Questions

Post by gvanbell »

Hey everyone. I'm getting ready to put our CD 27 in the water and have a few rigging questions for all the experts out there.

First, and this one makes me feel stupid, but I can't recall which way to install the masthead truck. It is assymetrical and for the life of me I can't remember which end goes forward and which goes aft.

The other question is for halyards. What do you all use? Size? Length? Brand? I am running the halyards aft to the cockpit as well. How long should the halyards be?

I hope to have some good photos and news up on our blog by the middle of next week, and then the truck comes to get us in the water!

For the cap head, look to see if there is one orientation where the screw holes line up best. Any VHF mounts or other clues? You may have one that truly fits either way.

Try 3/8" Sta-set for your lines. Cheap and reliable. White all around, unless you feel rich. The CD manuals give factory lengths, my guess is 65' for main and genoa. Honestly, I would suggest leaving the genoa halyard at the mast. Roller furled sails rarely hoist, and I was always up front to straighten things out.

Remember, this is a suggestion from a guy typing instead of sailing.

Owners Manual

Post by bottomscraper »

The owners manual shows 3/8" x 71' for the main halyard and 3/8 x 75' for the jib halyard. They probably
don't include running back to the cockpit so you will need to add a bit for that.

We have Sta-Set X halyards on our headsails and Samson XLS on our main. Sta-Set X is stiff and ugly. Since we have
our headsails on fulers we only mess with them a few times a year. I probably will go with something else when it
comes time to replace. Plain old Sta-Set is ok as is similar lines like Yale Portland Braid and Samson LS. I find the
Yale and Samson lines easier to splice than New England Rope products. but we no longer have splices on our halyards
we use buntline hitches. http://www.animatedknots.com/buntline/index.php

The manual also has a line drawing showing the masthead, from that it looks like the longer end faces forward,
hopefully someone with a CD27 can verify that.
